Former research scientist Ilya Sutskever spent about a year collecting evidence of Sam Altman’s falsehoods for the OpenAI board of directors. He disclosed this during testimony in the legal proceedings between ChatGPT’s developer and Elon Musk, reports Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The OpenAI co-founder confirmed that he had contemplated measures to remove Altman from the position of CEO at least a year before the board’s vote<\/a> in November 2023, due to Altman’s “consistent tendency to lie.”<\/p>\n

The former startup employee revealed that, at the board’s request, he prepared a 52-page document compiling evidence against Altman. He confirmed that the company’s leader engaged in “undermining authority and pitting executives against each other.”<\/p>\n

The scientist discussed Altman’s removal with Mira Murati, who was the CTO at the time.<\/p>\n

“His behavior did not contribute to achieving any great goal, including the creation of safe general artificial intelligence,” stated Sutskever.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He played a key role in the controversial dismissal and rehiring of Altman. After Altman’s removal, Sutskever began to worry that the company would collapse, prompting him to vote for Altman’s rehire.<\/p>\n

The testimony was given in the third week of the trial<\/a>, which could determine the future of ChatGPT’s developers.<\/p>\n

Musk insists that the transition of the project from a non-profit to a commercial structure was a mistake and created a dangerous precedent for other similar startups.<\/p>\n

The billionaire demands that OpenAI and Microsoft pay $150 billion in damages and that Altman and President Greg Brockman be removed from their positions.<\/p>\n

Closing arguments in the case are scheduled for May 14.<\/p>\n

Merger with Anthropic<\/h2>\n

Sutskever reported that his stake in OpenAI was valued at approximately $5 billion as of November 2025. The figure has now risen to $7 billion.<\/p>\n

The company’s president, Greg Brockman, holds a stake worth over $30 billion. Sam Altman does not own shares in the firm.<\/p>\n

Sutskever also confirmed that after Altman’s brief removal, the remaining board members met with representatives of the competing company Anthropic to discuss a merger.<\/p>\n

In October 2025, OpenAI allowed<\/a> current and former employees to sell shares worth up to $30 million. More than 600 people collectively received $6.6 billion in a single transaction.<\/p>\n

About 75 individuals decided to cash out the entire $30 million. The company tripled the previous limit of $10 million per employee, as the old cap caused dissatisfaction among leading researchers and developers.<\/p>\n

For many, the deal was the first real chance to receive money, as OpenAI requires employees to hold shares for two years before selling. This rule deprived those who joined the startup after ChatGPT’s debut in late 2022 of the opportunity to cash out.<\/p>\n
