{"id":9703,"date":"2024-01-11T13:08:50","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T11:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/fbi-joins-investigation-into-sec-x-account-hack\/"},"modified":"2024-01-11T13:08:50","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T11:08:50","slug":"fbi-joins-investigation-into-sec-x-account-hack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/fbi-joins-investigation-into-sec-x-account-hack\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI Joins Investigation into SEC X-Account Hack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) plans to investigate the hacking of its X social media account in collaboration with the <span data-descr=\"Federal Bureau of Investigation\" class=\"old_tooltip\">FBI<\/span>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/cybersecurity\/us-sec-fbi-join-probe-into-watchdogs-fake-x-social-media-post-2024-01-10\/\">Reuters<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe SEC continues to investigate this matter and is coordinating its actions with the appropriate law enforcement agencies, including the SEC\u2019s Office of Inspector General and the FBI,\u201d a spokesperson said in an email. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On January 10, hackers <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/secs-x-account-hacked-to-announce-fake-bitcoin-etf-approval\">gained control<\/a> of the regulator\u2019s account and posted a fake news story about the approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF, causing significant market volatility. <\/p>\n<p>Access to the profile was restored 15 minutes after the attack. The agency\u2019s security team noted that two-factor authentication had not been set up for the profile. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler published a denial on his personal page and announced the start of an investigation. <\/p>\n<p>The incident sparked a strong reaction not only from the crypto community but also from U.S. lawmakers. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI think we have witnessed the latest technological vulnerabilities of Washington and a truly low bar for the SEC,\u201d said Arkansas Representative French Hill. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He, along with other politicians, intends to send a letter to Gensler demanding clarification of the incident. <\/p>\n<p>Senator Bill Hagerty called the incident with the Commission\u2019s account \u201cunacceptable\u201d and stated that Congress \u201cneeds a clear answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/ripple-ceo-suggests-sec-should-investigate-itself-after-account-hack\">suggested<\/a> the agency investigate \u201citself.\u201d <span data-descr=\"Chief Security Officer\" class=\"old_tooltip\">CSO<\/span> of Coinbase, Philip Martin, offered the SEC assistance in organizing social media cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>Later that evening, following the fake post on X, the regulator did approve all 11 applications for spot Bitcoin ETFs.
