At that time, the leading cryptocurrency was trading above $70,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last week, prices <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/the-week-a-bleak-quantum-outlook-and-a-280m-drift-protocol-hack\">stalled<\/a> around the $67,000 mark, which was seized upon by <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/michael-saylor-the-microstrategy-founders-biography-and-views\">Michael Saylor&#8217;s<\/a> firm. Since the beginning of the year, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/strategy-expands-bitcoin-holdings-with-1031-btc-purchase-at-74326\">has repeatedly acquired<\/a> digital gold at local peaks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To finance new purchases, Strategy conducted several stock placements, raising a total of $474 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously, the firm published its financial results for the first quarter. The &#8220;paper&#8221; loss on digital assets reached $14.46 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company has secured a tax credit but is uncertain about its applicability. Strategy has fully reserved this amount and is preparing an additional fund of $500 million in case of further bitcoin price declines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Schiff and Saylor&#8217;s Debate\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Following the report&#8217;s release, a debate erupted on social media platform X between noted bitcoin critic Peter Schiff and Michael Saylor. Schiff claimed that over the past five years, the leading cryptocurrency has risen only 12% compared to 57-59% for US stock indices and 163-181% for gold and silver.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Over the past five years, the price of Bitcoin is up by just 12%. Over the same time period, the NASDAQ is up 57.4%, the S&#038;P 500 is up 59.4%, gold is up 163%, and silver is up 181%. Schiff excluded the first year of Strategy&#8217;s active accumulation. Since August 2020, when the company adopted a bitcoin strategy, bitcoin has increased by 36% \u2014 reaching $67,000 by September 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cryptocurrency outpaced gold by more than double, which gained 16% over the same period.
