The use by lawyers of generative artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, should be regulated. This stems from proposals<\/a> under consideration by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans.<\/p>\n

If approved, the regulation would apply to attorneys and self-represented parties participating in litigation. The document would require them to certify that if AI was used in preparing pleadings and motions, quotes and legal analysis were assessed for accuracy.<\/p>\n

Those who neglect this practice face sanctions and the rejection of filings. Members of the public may submit their comments on the proposal until January 4, 2024.<\/p>\n

Earlier, the DoNotPay startup offered lawyers $1 million<\/a> for the use of an AI attorney in the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

In the same month, the firm’s head Joshua Browder said that professional associations in some states threatened him and his company<\/a> with lawsuits. DoNotPay subsequently postponed the use of its AI attorney in the upcoming court proceeding.<\/p>\n

In March, the startup was accused of unauthorized practice of law<\/a>.<\/p>\n
