{"id":83482,"date":"2023-08-23T16:18:15","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T13:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=83482"},"modified":"2025-09-12T11:22:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T08:22:13","slug":"thai-citizens-to-receive-300-in-digital-currency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/thai-citizens-to-receive-300-in-digital-currency\/","title":{"rendered":"Thai citizens to receive $300 in digital currency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thailand&#8217;s parliament has elected a new prime minister \u2014 a real estate magnate and cryptocurrency advocate, Srettha Thavisin. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-new-prime-minister-srettha-thavisin-af1ed439685a703cd1c34abf40ae2876\">AP News<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>During the campaign, the prime minister-elect <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/thai-party-pledges-to-distribute-cryptocurrency-if-it-wins-the-may-elections\">promised<\/a> to distribute 10,000 baht (~$300) in digital assets to every citizen aged 16 and over. However, the funds could be spent only within four kilometres of home.<\/p>\n<p>The government airdrop initiative totals around 500 billion baht (~$15 billion). The distribution will be in the national token, not in cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the Bank of Thailand <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/thailand-launches-pilot-for-retail-cbdc\">launched<\/a> a pilot project for a retail <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-central-bank-digital-currency-cbdc\">CBDC<\/a> within the regulatory sandbox. Testing involved more than 10,000 users from Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri), Siam Commercial Bank, and Singapore-based payments provider 2C2P.<\/p>\n<p>The newly elected prime minister is the chairman of the opposition party Pheu Thai.<\/p>\n<p>Before entering politics, Thavisin served as chief executive of the Sansiri property developer. In 2021 his company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaohoon.com\/news\/international\/445983\">\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0435\u043b\u0430 15% \u0430\u043a\u0446\u0438\u0439<\/a> of Thailand&#8217;s digital-asset service provider XSpring, which, together with Krungthai Bank, operates a crypto broker and a licensed <span data-descr=\"initial coin offering\" class=\"old_tooltip\">ICO<\/span> platform.<\/p>\n<p>As of April 2022, businesses in Thailand <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/thailand-to-ban-use-of-cryptocurrencies-in-payments\">were advised<\/a> to stop accepting cryptocurrency payments.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/thailand-extends-vat-exemption-for-cryptocurrency-transfers-through-the-end-of-2023\">scrapped<\/a> VAT on transfers of digital assets until the end of 2023.
