This will allow select US clients to access cryptocurrency futures trading.<\/p>\n<p>The license for Coinbase Financial Markets, the subsidiary, was issued by <span data-descr=\"U.S. National Futures Association\" class=\"old_tooltip\">NFA<\/span>, the regulator.<\/p>\n<p>Greg Tousar, Coinbase&#8217;s Vice President of Institutional Products, called the approval a \u201ccritical milestone\u201d for the company. According to the executive, the crypto-derivatives market accounts for about 75% of digital-asset trading activity.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThe ability to trade using leverage will require smaller initial investments from clients than traditional spot trading. Users will also be able to use risk-management tools for the underlying crypto assets,\u201d<\/em> said Tousar.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Coinbase<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/coinbase-files-application-to-register-as-a-futures-commission-merchant\"> filed an application<\/a> with the NFA in September 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, the exchange<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/coinbase-to-acquire-fairx-a-regulated-crypto-derivatives-platform\"> acquired FairX<\/a> \u2014 a CFTC-regulated crypto-derivatives platform that was renamed Coinbase Derivatives Exchange.<\/p>\n<p>The platform is open to third-party brokers, FCMs, and market makers.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tousar, year-to-date bitcoin futures volume on the platform reached $4.7 billion, with Ethereum-based instruments at $2 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in May 2023, Coinbase<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/coinbase-launches-international-exchange-for-bitcoin-futures-trading\"> opened<\/a> an international exchange for trading crypto derivatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coinbase has received an FCM license from the CFTC.
