{"id":82447,"date":"2023-08-01T10:56:54","date_gmt":"2023-08-01T07:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=82447"},"modified":"2025-09-12T05:05:49","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T02:05:49","slug":"german-regulator-opens-investigation-into-worldcoin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/german-regulator-opens-investigation-into-worldcoin\/","title":{"rendered":"German regulator opens investigation into Worldcoin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Bavarian state data protection supervisory authority (BayLDA) has been investigating since late 2022 the Worldcoin project by Sam Altman regarding the collection of biometric information. <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/german-data-watchdog-probing-worldcoin-crypto-project-official-says-2023-07-31\/\\\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator fears that the company processes \u201csensitive data on a very large scale\u201d using new technologies.<\/p>\n<p>According to BayLDA chair Michael Will, such a situation poses substantial risks, including in relation to the user agreement, which must be \u201cexhaustive and clear\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>\u201cThese technologies, at first glance, have not been adequately developed and analyzed for a specific primary purpose \u2014 processing data in the context of the transfer of financial information,\u201d added Will.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The project has drawn close attention from local authorities, as the Tools For Humanity development team has a subsidiary in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The official noted that several European supervisory authorities have also shown interest in Worldcoin and are requesting information about the company.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the UK Information Commissioner\u2019s Office said that <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/uk-regulator-to-examine-worldcoins-activities\">will study the process<\/a> of user verification by the project. In addition, France\u2019s National Commission on Informatics and Liberties <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/french-regulator-questions-the-legality-of-worldcoins-biometric-data-collection\">called the legality of the startup&#8217;s biometric data collection \u201cdubious\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Worldcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/sam-altmans-worldcoin-project-launches-its-own-token\">announced the official launch<\/a> on July 24. The project\u2019s main product\u2014the World ID protocol\u2014is based on <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-zero-knowledge-proof\">zero-knowledge proofs<\/a>.
