{"id":81083,"date":"2023-07-02T11:10:31","date_gmt":"2023-07-02T08:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=81083"},"modified":"2025-09-11T20:49:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T17:49:17","slug":"u-s-court-orders-kraken-to-hand-over-customer-tax-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/u-s-court-orders-kraken-to-hand-over-customer-tax-information\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. court orders Kraken to hand over customer tax information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A United States District Court for the Northern District of California <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cand.407965\/gov.uscourts.cand.407965.34.0.pdf\">ordered<\/a> the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken to provide information about its customers to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).<\/p>\n<p>The platform will be required to disclose names, dates of birth, physical addresses, phone numbers, and <span data-descr=\"Taxpayer Identification Number\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Tax ID<\/span> of users who conducted transactions totaling more than $20,000 in a calendar year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>&#8220;The government has a legitimate objective in seeking the described materials,&#8221; said Judge Joseph Spero.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the documents, the IRS sought the information to identify individuals and adjust the tax liabilities of U.S. citizens who conducted transactions with crypto-laundered assets in 2016\u20132020.<\/p>\n<p>The agency <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/kraken-to-pay-30-million-to-settle-sec-charges\">filed the corresponding petition<\/a> in February 2023, when Kraken settled charges brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. At the time, the company emphasised that one of the platform&#8217;s guiding principles is ensuring user safety and privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in April, Kraken <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/kraken-files-suit-against-the-u-s-internal-revenue-service\">filed suit<\/a> against the IRS.
