The <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/biden-administration-weighs-possible-rules-for-ai-tools-like-chatgpt-46f8257b\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener nofollow\\\" title=\\\"\\\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Commerce has launched a call for comments on whether potentially risky AI models should undergo a certification process before their release.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>\u201cWe know we need to set guardrails to ensure they are used responsibly,\u201d said Alan Davidson, head of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at the department.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>The comment window will run through June 10, 2023. According to Davidson, the comments will help the agency craft recommendations for policymakers on how to approach AI issues.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>He noted that his agency&#8217;s legal mandate includes advising the president on technical policy, not writing or enforcing rules.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of Microsoft backed the administration&#8217;s decision to place AI development under close scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>\u201cWe should all welcome such a step in public policy to gather broad feedback, consider the issues carefully, and act promptly,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Cyberspace Administration of China <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/china-to-regulate-the-use-of-generative-ai\">published<\/a> a draft rule aimed at developers of generative AI models. If the document is adopted, the regulator would require providers to ensure that their services do not generate content that threatens national security.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>In March, more than 1,000 industry experts urged <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/hundreds-of-experts-call-for-a-six-month-pause-on-training-the-gpt-4-successor\">pausing the development of large language models<\/a> for six months.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>Later, a number of other experts <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/experts-criticise-plan-to-pause-ai-research\">criticised the authors of the letter<\/a>. They were accused of distorting scientific research to promote the idea of AI&#8217;s &#8216;excessive power&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>In April, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/biden-says-ai-concerns-are-premature\">called<\/a> concerns about AI premature.
