However, after transferring the funds, the defendant spent them on gambling and paying off his debts.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities allege that the broker forged documents showing investors\u2019 profits. He also claimed to have developed a successful altcoin trading strategy, through which he earned more than 100% returns in three months.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cRussell turned the demand for cryptocurrency investments into a fraudulent scheme to defraud investors and fund his lifestyle. [\u2026] We will continue to aggressively pursue criminals engaging in such schemes on the digital asset markets,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If found guilty, Russell could face up to 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in March, US authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/in-the-united-states-chinese-businessman-arrested-over-1-billion-cryptocurrency-fraud\">arrested<\/a> a Chinese citizen, Miles Gu, on charges of organizing cryptocurrency-related fraud amounting to more than $1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>In April, South Korean authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/south-korean-authorities-arrest-coinone-employees\">detained<\/a> employees of the local crypto exchange Coinone.
