{"id":74593,"date":"2023-02-24T09:23:05","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T07:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=74593"},"modified":"2025-09-09T21:02:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T18:02:16","slug":"sam-bankman-fried-charged-with-conspiracy-to-commit-bank-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/sam-bankman-fried-charged-with-conspiracy-to-commit-bank-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Bankman-Fried Charged with Conspiracy to Commit Bank Fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former head<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/how-the-collapse-of-ftx-and-alameda-research-will-affect-the-crypto-industry\"> of a collapsed<\/a> FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), has been charged with new criminal charges, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/214491\/sam-bankman-fried-faces-new-criminal-charges-including-conspiracy-to-commit-bank-fraud\"> The Block<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The number of charges against him has risen from eight to twelve. The court&#8217;s amended indictment also adds conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding bank fraud, the indictment states that SBF \u201cwillfully and knowingly\u201d informed a financial institution that the account was intended for trading and market making. In reality, it was used to receive and transfer the exchange&#8217;s customers&#8217; funds.<\/p>\n<p>Together with the foregoing counts, Bankman-Fried<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/us-court-unveils-charges-against-sam-bankman-fried\"> faces up to 115 years in prison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2022, the court said that SBF was charged with, among other things:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>conspiring with partners to defraud, misappropriating customer funds from the trading platform and using them to pay Alameda Research\u2019s expenses and debts;<\/li>\n<li>money laundering;<\/li>\n<li>violating U.S. campaign finance laws.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The expansion of the charges followed Bloomberg&#8217;s report that former FTX chief technology officer Nishad Singh<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/bloomberg-another-top-ftx-executive-plans-to-plead-guilty-to-fraud\"> would plead guilty to fraud<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The platform&#8217;s chief technology officer participated in channeling <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/ftx-seeks-return-of-donations-from-u-s-politicians\">political donations<\/a> in the United States. Since 2020 Singh has transferred more than $9.3 million to Democratic candidates. He also secured hundreds of millions of dollars in credit from Alameda.<\/p>\n<p>The new indictment states that Bankman-Fried made certain political contributions on behalf of two other FTX executives. SBF sought to conceal interactions with Republican candidates, as he was known as a supporter of left-leaning views.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2022, two other associates of Bankman-Fried \u2014 former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison and the exchange&#8217;s co-founder Gary Wang \u2014 admitted guilt in charges related to the collapse of FTX. SBF<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/sam-bankman-fried-refuses-to-plead-guilty-trial-set-for-october\"> did not strike a deal<\/a> with prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2023, the court<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/court-does-not-rule-out-bankman-frieds-return-to-prison\"> did not rule out<\/a> Bankman-Fried&#8217;s return to prison.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier prosecutors<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/us-authorities-seek-to-bar-sbf-from-communicating-with-witnesses\"> sought to modify the terms<\/a> of the former FTX CEO&#8217;s house arrest. Law enforcement suspected SBF of using the Signal messaging app to send encrypted messages to a witness. Subsequently, he<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/court-bans-sam-bankman-fried-from-using-a-vpn\"> was accused<\/a> of using a VPN.<\/p>\n<p>As reported, Bankman-Fried<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/bahamas-authorities-arrest-ftx-founder-sam-bankman-fried\"> was arrested<\/a> on December 12, 2022, in the Bahamas at the request of the U.S. government.
