Purely speculative (but optimistic) bet on what happens next. <\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc47<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ryan Selkis \ud83e\udd77 (@twobitidiot) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/twobitidiot\/status\/1595137620941541376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 22, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The expert reminded of the community<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/rumours-of-dcg-troubles-surface-as-ftx-collapse-unfolds\"> version about DCG&#8217;s debt<\/a> to its subsidiary Genesis in a $1.1 billion promissory note, hidden from potential investors.<\/p>\n<p>On November 18, it became known about the unsuccessful attempts to raise emergency financing of $1 billion for Genesis Global Capital<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/genesis-global-capital-sought-emergency-financing-of-1-billion-reports-say\"> by the morning of November 14<\/a>. The request was filed before<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/genesis-global-capital-suspends-crypto-lending-operations\"> the platform&#8217;s suspension of crypto-lending operations<\/a> after<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/ftx-group-files-for-bankruptcy-sam-bankman-fried-resigns-as-ceo\"> the collapse of FTX.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Selkis&#8217;s assessment, to avoid Genesis&#8217;s bankruptcy, a sum of $500 million to $1 billion is needed. Because of the collapse<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/british-virgin-islands-court-orders-liquidation-of-three-arrows-capital\"> of hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC)<\/a>, the unit lost more money (<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/three-arrows-capital-owes-genesis-a-cryptocurrency-otc-platform-2-36-billion\">$2.36 billion<\/a>) than it had earned since inception. The resulting \u201chole\u201d was bridged by the promissory note mentioned above.<\/p>\n<p>The parent DCG currently has negative net assets. The holding includes Grayscale, generating $250\u2013300 million in management fees from digital assets<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/what-is-grayscale-investments\">Grayscale<\/a>. The financial health of DCG is now entirely tied to the latter.<\/p>\n<p>The company is currently preparing for Genesis&#8217;s bankruptcy under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code.<\/p>\n<p>According to the expert, this will hurt the reputation of Barry Silbert&#8217;s group of companies, but it&#8217;s a &#8216;bitter pill&#8217; that is better swallowed for all sides of the process. Thus, creditors will believe that DCG fully backs Genesis, while the parent company may &#8216;escape&#8217;, arguing that it is also a victim in the bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u00abIf creditors agree to the terms, then today everyone will have more liquidity, fewer legal costs (possibly), overall damage\u00bb<\/em>, \u2014 Selkis explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In his view, DCG could offer creditors claims against 3AC\/FTX\/Alameda in bankruptcy proceedings and<a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%92%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%82\"> warrants<\/a> on DCG\/Grayscale.<\/p>\n<p>From the outside, the scenario may look like<a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A0%D1%83%D1%81%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B0%D1%8F_%D1%80%D1%83%D0%BB%D0%B5%D1%82%D0%BA%D0%B0\"> Russian roulette<\/a>. However, it is probably the best among all possible. Not all is lost yet, but time is ticking, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Selkis predicted that some Genesis creditors will convert their claims into preferred shares or new DCG debt, as well as warrants (in a scheme similar to the 2008 crisis when investor billionaire Warren Buffett supported Goldman Sachs).
