{"id":69767,"date":"2022-11-09T11:15:37","date_gmt":"2022-11-09T09:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=69767"},"modified":"2025-09-07T21:58:25","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T18:58:25","slug":"tornado-cash-accused-of-facilitating-financing-for-north-koreas-nuclear-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/tornado-cash-accused-of-facilitating-financing-for-north-koreas-nuclear-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"Tornado Cash accused of facilitating financing for North Korea&#8217;s nuclear programme."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-descr=\"U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control\" class=\"old_tooltip\">OFAC<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy1087\">updated sanctions<\/a> against the cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, citing its role in financing North Korea&#8217;s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<p>According to the agency, the service facilitated malicious cyber activity, the proceeds of which helped fund North Korea\u2019s weapons of mass destruction programme.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, OFAC <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/policy-issues\/financial-sanctions\/faqs\/1095\">explained<\/a> who could potentially fall under sanctions due to ties with Tornado Cash. This includes founders, developers, DAO members or Tornado Cash users, as well as other persons supporting the service.<\/p>\n<p>To date, the agency has not announced additional restrictions on any particular individuals or entities.<\/p>\n<p>In August, OFAC added Tornado Cash to the sanctions list on suspicion of laundering <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/us-sanctions-tornado-cash-the-ethereum-mixer\">over $7 billion in cryptocurrency<\/a>. The service was used by the North Korean hacking group Lazarus Group.<\/p>\n<p>Chainalysis estimates that, during its operation, Tornado Cash processed over $3.5 billion, of which up to $1.2 billion was directly linked to thefts, hacks and other illicit operations.<\/p>\n<p>Elliptic researchers say that Tornado Cash <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/elliptic-tornado-cash-was-a-key-service-for-nft-scammers\">was actively used<\/a> to launder money obtained from NFT fraud.<\/p>\n<p>On 12 August, Dutch authorities arrested Tornado Cash&#8217;s developer Alexey Pertsev. He is suspected of involvement in laundering funds and concealing criminal financial flows. In late September, the court remanded Pertsev in custody for two months.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the U.S. Treasury allowed users to withdraw digital assets from Tornado Cash\u2013affiliated addresses.
