This was reported by <a href=\\\"https:\/\/finbold.com\/u-s-department-of-justice-sues-founder-of-helix-crypto-mixer-to-recover-60-million\/\\\">Finbold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2020, Harmon was arrested in the United States on suspicion of laundering more than $300 million through darknet markets Abraxas, Agora, Hansa, Hydra and Wall Street Market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/fincen-imposes-first-ever-fine-on-bitcoin-mixer\">imposed a fine on him<\/a> of $60 million, which he did not pay.<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. federal court ruled that Bitcoin is money for the purposes of this case. The Department of Justice also for the first time described cryptocurrency mixing as a crime.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2021 Harmon <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-mixer-operator-helix-pleads-guilty-to-laundering-300-million\">pleaded guilty to laundering more than $300 million<\/a> through Helix from 2014 to 2017. He faces up to 20 years in prison; a date for the final verdict has not yet been determined.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/us-arrests-russian-national-over-laundering-1-2-million-btc\">arrested<\/a> the alleged operator of the Bitcoin Fog bitcoin-mixing service, Roman Sterlingov in April 2021.
