{"id":67751,"date":"2022-09-27T15:32:11","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T12:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=67751"},"modified":"2025-09-07T08:19:50","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T05:19:50","slug":"study-finds-bitcoin-mining-accounts-for-0-1-of-global-co2-emissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/study-finds-bitcoin-mining-accounts-for-0-1-of-global-co2-emissions\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds Bitcoin mining accounts for 0.1% of global CO2 emissions."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since the inception of the Bitcoin network up to 21 September 2022, Bitcoin miners produced 199.65 million tonnes of CO2e, according to <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.jbs.cam.ac.uk\/insight\/2022\/a-deep-dive-into-bitcoins-environmental-impact\/\\\">\u0434\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/a> from the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF).<\/p>\n<p>An annual figure sits at 48.35 million tonnes of CO\u2082, equal to 0.1% of global emissions. <a href=\\\"https:\/\/ccaf.io\/cbeci\/ghg\/comparisons\\\">\u0410\u043d\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0438\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043e\u0431\u044a\u0435\u043c \u0433\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/a> is produced by Nepal \u2013 48.37 million tonnes and <span data-descr=\\\"Central African Republic\\\" class=\\\"old_tooltip\\\">\u0426\u0410\u0420<\/span> \u2013 46.58 million tonnes. For comparison, the gold mining industry emits 100.4 million tonnes of greenhouse gases in a year.<\/p>\n<p>The figures are based on the geographic distribution of Bitcoin mining in January 2022. CCAF combined the latest data with publicly available information on electricity production in different regions.<\/p>\n<p>However, the data do not cover emission-reduction measures, including the use of flare gas, autonomous mining, <span data-descr=\\\"reuse\\\" class=\\\"old_tooltip\\\">\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0443\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438\u044e<\/span> of exhausted heat and other factors.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>\u201cWe lack data to document this,\u201d said report author Alexander Noymuller.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>CCAF researchers also calculated that the share of green energy in Bitcoin mining is 37.6%. This estimate contrasts with Bitcoin Mining Council&#8217;s figures for Q2 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/report-bitcoin-mining-energy-efficiency-up-46-year-on-year\">estimated this share at 59.5%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to CCAF&#8217;s findings, current annual CO\u2082 emissions from mining the first cryptocurrency fell 14.1% compared with 2021.
