In early 2022, she <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/us-senator-requests-data-from-mining-companies-on-environmental-impact\">requested<\/a> data from six mining companies on environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the Swedish central bank <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/swedens-central-bank-urges-ban-on-bitcoin-for-environmental-reasons\">urged<\/a> a ban on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies mined using <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/what-is-the-proof-of-work-pow-algorithm\">Proof-of-Work (PoW)<\/a>, due to environmental impact. According to the bank&#8217;s report, the energy consumption of this mining method is equivalent to that of 200,000 households.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible that, after <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/the-merge-what-to-expect-from-ethereums-largest-update\">The Merge in the Ethereum network<\/a>, environmental debates will flare up anew \u2014 Bitcoin, the largest PoW cryptocurrency, will be criticised even more.<\/p>\n<p>How large is Bitcoin&#8217;s energy consumption globally? What will it be in the coming decades if the price of the first cryptocurrency rises to $2 million? Armed with analytical materials <a href=\"https:\/\/arcane.no\/research\/how-much-energy-will-bitcoin-consume-in-the-future\">Arcane Research<\/a> and the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF) materials, ForkLog determined Bitcoin&#8217;s share of global energy consumption and its long-term growth prospects.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-keypoints article_keypoints\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Debates over the environmental impact of mining continue around the world.<\/li>\n<li>The energy efficiency of cryptocurrency mining improves over time, and the share of green energy in the mining industry increases.<\/li>\n<li>Contrary to critics&#8217; views, Bitcoin&#8217;s energy consumption globally is not large, but in the coming decades the situation could change substantially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Between Kazakhstan and Pakistan<\/h2>\n<p>CCAF&#8217;s site presents intriguing comparisons aimed at giving a sense of Bitcoin&#8217;s energy appetite.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the energy consumption of the Bitcoin network is comparable to the same measure for gold mining.<\/p>\n<figure The exception will be miners with access to very cheap electricity,\u201d \u2014 the researcher said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The researcher suggested that the CAPEX component will gradually decline as innovation in ASIC device manufacturing slows.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the above trends into account, the annual growth rate of miners&#8217; share of electricity costs will be 2%. By 2040, the figure will reach 71%.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI estimate the average electricity cost in the mining industry at $50 per MWh. I expect that figure to hold in the foreseeable future. Global inflation is already high and likely to persist. Yet the ultra-competitive nature of mining will, over time, spur participants to seek cheap energy,\u201d the researcher said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mellerud is confident that miners will spread to diverse corners of the globe. Some market participants monetise the heat produced by their devices, which also &#8220;offsets the impact of inflation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cLooking at any mining headlines, you might think the industry is a major global energy consumer,\u201d \u2014 noted the researcher.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yet Bitcoin&#8217;s share of global energy consumption remains minuscule \u2014 around 0,05%. The figure, in Mellerud&#8217;s view, is &#8220;on the margin of rounding error&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, energy use has historically risen with price. Yet, one can conclude that digital gold could become a genuinely meaningful energy consumer if its price reaches several million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Rising market value spurs mining activity and, accordingly, raises energy consumption. But regular halvings counter this: to raise total electricity costs in the long run, the price of the cryptocurrency would have to rise extremely quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Rising transaction fees could mitigate the impact of halvings on Bitcoin miners. But this would only be possible if Bitcoin is actively used as a means of payment.<\/p>\n<p>The price of the first cryptocurrency mainly depends on market demand for it as a store of value.
