After arriving in Athens, he disappeared, according to his lawyer Zoi Konstantopoulou.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-update-2 article_update\"><time class=\"gtb_text-wrappers_update_time\">5 August 2022 | 09:12<\/time><span class=\"gtb_text-wrappers_update_head\">Update: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to Vinnik&#8217;s family, he was flown from Greece to the United States on a private plane \u2014 initially to Boston, and then to San Francisco.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-update-2 article_update\"><time class=\"gtb_text-wrappers_update_time\">5 August 2022 | 12:42<\/time><span class=\"gtb_text-wrappers_update_head\">Update: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>French lawyer Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Belo confirmed that his client was immediately taken from Athens to the United States. He added that the Russian&#8217;s defense has been entrusted to state-appointed lawyers, as he has no funds for private lawyers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On 4 August, the Investigative Chamber of the Paris Court of Appeal ruled the extradition request to the United States invalid and issued a decision to transfer him to Greece, according to TASS.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/vinnik-remains-in-a-french-prison-ahead-of-greece-extradition\">it was reported<\/a> that up to this moment he would continue to remain in a French prison.<\/p>\n<p>However, almost immediately Vinnik was sent to Greece, according to attorney Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Belo. The latter noted that from there the Russian could be extradited to the United States under an arrest warrant issued earlier by a San Francisco court.<\/p>\n<p>The Greek lawyer Zoi Konstantopoulou said that after arriving in Greece Vinnik disappeared. According to her, this resembles a forcible abduction:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe are at the police department of the Athens airport. [Officials] said they do not know where Alexander Vinnik is, that he never passed through here, that they do not know his name, they do not know where he is. In short, they know nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She added that Vinnik may still be inside the police department, or may already be en route to the United States:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf something like that happened, it would be one of the most egregious violations of international law. It would be kidnapping and forced disappearance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Earlier, Vinnik was detained in Greece on suspicion of laundering $4 billion through the BTC-e cryptocurrency exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently he was extradited to France, where a court sentenced the Russian to <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/alexander-vinnik-sentenced-to-five-years-in-prison-and-a-e100000-fine\">five years in prison and a fine of \u20ac100,000<\/a>. He was found guilty of money laundering, but charges of extortion and creating the Locky ransomware were dropped.<\/p>\n<p>The defence attempted to appeal the verdict, but the Paris Court of Appeal <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/paris-court-upholds-vinniks-five-year-sentence\">confirmed the ruling<\/a> of the first instance.<\/p>\n<p>In July, U.S. authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/alexander-vinniks-lawyer-says-he-could-be-extradited-to-the-united-states\">withdrew the extradition request for Vinnik<\/a> from France, though his lawyers called it a \u201cdeceptive maneuver\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>If he is ever extradited to the United States, Vinnik faces about 50 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Read ForkLog&#8217;s bitcoin news on our Telegram \u2014 cryptocurrency news, prices and analysis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Russian Alexander Vinnik was extradited from France to Greece.
