{"id":56101,"date":"2022-01-18T12:55:45","date_gmt":"2022-01-18T10:55:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=56101"},"modified":"2025-09-04T04:48:23","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T01:48:23","slug":"scientists-deploy-ai-to-forecast-gulf-of-mexico-coastal-floods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/scientists-deploy-ai-to-forecast-gulf-of-mexico-coastal-floods\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists deploy AI to forecast Gulf of Mexico coastal floods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of American scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lsu.edu\/eng\/news\/2022\/01\/kaisercoastalflooding.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">will develop<\/a> an artificial intelligence system that predicts coastal flooding in the Gulf of Mexico region.<\/p>\n<p>Under the MuSiKAL project, researchers will combine the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s large-scale Earth model with a multi-physics coastal circulation model. They say this will enable a high-fidelity digital twin that supports AI with reduced latency in flood forecasting and impact assessment.<\/p>\n<p>They also plan to develop a methodology for continuous AI-driven data collection from satellites and ground observations.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hartmut Kaiser, a professor at Louisiana State University, the Gulf of Mexico is ideal for coastal-protection research. These regions are home to more than half of the U.S. population and account for around 58% of the country&#8217;s gross domestic product, he added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Gulf of Mexico coast along Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi is home to both the United States\u2019 critical energy hubs and socially vulnerable populations,\u201d Kaiser said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The proposed efforts will help minimise flood damage and improve the region\u2019s socio-economic stability, the scientist said.<\/p>\n<p>MuSiKAL is one of three projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research.
