Here\u2019s why it matters: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S7pQ5rVc6n\">pic.twitter.com\/S7pQ5rVc6n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Emmer (@RepTomEmmer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepTomEmmer\/status\/1481283945492852743?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 12, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Emmer proposed amending the law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/f\/1913-federal-reserve-act.asp\">&#8216;The Federal Reserve Act&#8217;<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abExcept as specifically provided by this Act, the Federal Reserve Bank may not directly offer products and services to an individual, maintain an account on behalf of an individual, or issue a CBDC directly to an individual\u00bb.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the congressman, requiring citizens to open Fed accounts to access the digital currency would put regulators on a slippery slope reminiscent of China&#8217;s digital authoritarianism.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Any CBDC implemented by the Fed must be open, permissionless, and private. This means that digital dollar transactions must occur on a transparent blockchain, preserve the privacy elements of cash, and be accessible to everyone\u00bb, \u2014 Emmer stressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He also warned about the risk of using Americans&#8217; personal data for mass surveillance, cybersecurity concerns, and the fact that the agency &#8220;has no such powers and should not have them&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The bill currently has no co-sponsors. In the House, the Republican Party, to which Emmer belongs, is in the minority.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Fed Chair Jerome Powell promised in the coming weeks to present <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/powell-pledges-to-publish-cbdc-report-in-coming-weeks\">a report on the digital dollar<\/a>.
