The fund will provide lawyers, develop defence strategies, and cover legal costs so that Bitcoin developers can continue their work.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe are offering a coordinated and formalised response,\u201d<\/em> wrote Dorsey.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The board includes Block CEO, Chaincode Labs co-founder Alex Morcos, and scientist Martin White. The fund, if necessary, is prepared to consider external financing.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund will be supported by volunteers and part-time lawyers. Its board will focus on resource allocation.<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit&#8217;s first act will be to support 16 developers named as defendants in Craig Wright&#8217;s lawsuit. The self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/high-court-allows-craig-wright-to-sue-bitcoin-core-developers\">demanded<\/a> access to the bitcoins allegedly lost due to their alleged fault.<\/p>\n<p>In December, the payments firm founded and led by Dorsey, Square <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/square-to-rename-to-block-as-it-focuses-on-blockchain-projects\">renamed<\/a> its name to Block to emphasise its commitment to blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier the company invested <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/square-invested-50-million-in-bitcoin\">$50 million<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/square-invests-a-further-170-million-in-bitcoin\">$170 million<\/a> of its own capital in bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2021, Dorsey and rapper Jay-Z pledged <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/jack-dorsey-and-jay-z-to-earmark-500-btc-for-bitcoin-developers\">to allocate<\/a> 500 BTC to create \u20bftrust, aimed at supporting Bitcoin developers in Africa and India.<\/p>\n<p>Another Dorsey project, Spiral (<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/square-to-rename-to-block-as-it-focuses-on-blockchain-projects\">formerly Square Crypto<\/a>), in December <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/spiral-formerly-square-crypto-unveils-video-on-lightning-network-node-launch-initiative\">presented<\/a> a set of tools for developing cryptocurrency wallets and other technical solutions on the Lightning Network. <\/p>\n<p>In January 2022, Block opened vacancies for specialists <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/jack-dorseys-block-to-form-a-team-to-develop-a-next-generation-asic-bitcoin-miner-formerly-square\">in developing an ASIC miner of a new generation and a hardware wallet<\/a> \u201cfor the next 100 million Bitcoin users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The possibility of creating the latter <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/square-weighs-up-hardware-bitcoin-wallet\">was announced by Dorsey in June 2021<\/a>.
