{"id":55377,"date":"2021-12-29T10:45:11","date_gmt":"2021-12-29T08:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=55377"},"modified":"2025-09-04T01:03:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T22:03:20","slug":"hearing-for-former-bitmex-executive-set-for-october-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/hearing-for-former-bitmex-executive-set-for-october-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Hearing for former BitMEX executive set for October 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The legal team for BitMEX&#8217;s former development chief Greg Dwyer has persuaded a U.S. judge to delay proceedings until October 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/markets\/aussie-crypto-mogul-gets-break-in-criminal-case-20211228-p59kga.html\">The Sydney Morning Herald<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys argued the delay was necessary on the grounds of insufficient time to prepare for the proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge John Koeltl also agreed to sever Dwyer&#8217;s case from the other three defendants.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2020, the U.S. Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/cftc-sues-bitmex-and-its-founders\">charged<\/a> the exchange&#8217;s co-founders Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo, Samuel Reed, and Greg Dwyer with violations of the Bank Secrecy Act. Each faces up to five years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Reid was arrested in the United States; he <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/bitmex-cto-samuel-reed-released-on-5-million-bond\">posted a $5 million bond<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Delo <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/court-frees-bitmex-co-founder-on-20-million-bond\">surrendered to U.S. authorities<\/a> in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/former-bitmex-chief-surrenders-to-u-s-authorities-released-on-10-million-bond\">flew from Singapore to Hawaii<\/a> in April, <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/ex-bitmex-ceo-hayes-agrees-to-voluntary-surrender-to-u-s-authorities\">agreeing to the terms<\/a> of voluntary surrender.<\/p>\n<p>Dwyer, who resided in Bermuda, <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/former-bitmex-executive-agrees-to-extradition-to-the-united-states\">agreed to extradition<\/a> in September.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes, Delo and Reed <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/bitmex-founders-to-stand-trial-in-2022\">will appear before the court in March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of the Southern District of New York urged a joint trial for all four defendants, noting that Dwyer had been aware of the case since the indictment.<\/p>\n<p>However, Judge Koeltl noted that the lawyers for the former BitMEX development chief had not participated in the proceedings until recently.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHe will have substantially less time to prepare for trial than the other defendants.
