Wright case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Miami, a jury has delivered a verdict in the case of the self-proclaimed Bitcoin creator Craig Wright and the family of his former partner Dave Kleiman. No punitive damages.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Carolina Bolado (@CarolinaBolado) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CarolinaBolado\/status\/1467898095623151616?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 6, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>According to the verdict, Wright must pay $100 million in compensation to W&#038;K Info Defense Research for <a href=\"https:\/\/billgreen.law\/glossary\/conversion\"><span data-descr=\"a form of misappropriation of property involving unauthorized control over it\" class=\"old_tooltip\">conversion<\/span><\/a> of the &#8220;misappropriated&#8221; bitcoins. In 2019, the self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto tried to prove to the court that Kleiman had no rights to the claimed stake in the company, and spoke of an alleged disavowal by the latter of his stake.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI feel incredibly happy and vindicated. I am not a fraud and never have been\u201d, the words of Wright, cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2021\/12\/06\/craig-wright-found-not-liable-for-kleiman-business-partnership\/\">CoinDesk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The jury rejected other claims against him.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier WizSec experts said the jury was \u201csimply choosing between two erroneous decisions\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNeither Wright nor Kleiman had anything to do with the creation of Bitcoin and didn\u2019t mine BTC, so they\u2019re quarrelling over fictional assets that never existed in the first place (or are trying to lay claim to other people\u2019s bitcoins).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Neither Wright nor Kleiman had anything to do with the creation of Bitcoin and didn\u2019t mine any bitcoins, so they\u2019re quarrelling over fictional assets that never existed in the first place (or are trying to lay claim to other people\u2019s bitcoins).<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 WizSec Bitcoin Research (@wizsecurity) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wizsecurity\/status\/1465804454104473602?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 30, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf the jury ultimately orders Wright to pay Kleiman a large sum, the reporting should focus not on the amount but on the fact that these are money Wright would never have and would never possess,\u201d the experts added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In WizSec&#8217;s view, in any case, \u201cthis is a mockery of justice,\u201d but Wright&#8217;s losses would be at least \u201cpoetic justice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2018, Ira Kleiman, the brother of the late computer forensics expert and mathematician Dave Kleiman, filed suit against Craig Wright.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiff alleged that the latter had misappropriated 1.1 million BTC, allegedly belonging to Kleiman, who is linked to the creation of the first cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, WizSec researchers found that the Bitcoin addresses mentioned in the suit had never belonged to Kleiman or Wright.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2019, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida ordered Wright to forfeit 500,000 BTC. The self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto refused to participate in the settlement of the claims. Proceedings were resumed.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2020, 145 early Bitcoin addresses signed a message accusing Wright of fraud and perjury. He claimed that these addresses belonged to him.<\/p>\n<p>In June of that year, Wright and Kleiman&#8217;s lawyers presented a list of 36 witnesses. Among the experts they included early Bitcoin developer Gavin Andresen and crypto-philosophy evangelist Andreas Antonopoulos. In his testimony, Andresen did not acknowledge Wright as the creator of digital gold and suggested that he may have been misled.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2020, the court <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/craig-wright-denied-summary-judgment-in-kleiman-v-wright-over-1-1-million-btc\">rejected<\/a> Wright&#8217;s motion for simplified proceedings. He had previously stated that the statute of limitations had expired and that the plaintiff could not prove an oral agreement.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2021,<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/craig-wright-demands-bitcoin-core-developers-restore-access-to-mt-gox-stolen-bitcoins\"> Wright demanded from the Bitcoin Core developers<\/a> to restore access to two Bitcoin wallets. One address is linked to the Mt. Gox exchange hack.<\/p>\n<p>As Wright&#8217;s defense argued, it rested on two points: a diagnosed autism spectrum disorder and the absence of a written agreement with Kleiman.
