Members of Kazakhstan’s Majilis (the lower house of parliament) have proposed creating a registry of mining farms and raising electricity tariffs for cryptocurrency mining, local media report. local media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to deputy Zhambyl Akhmetbekov, foreign miners consume large amounts of electricity and increase their income abroad, without benefiting Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n

“In this regard, it is proposed to create a legislative registry to account for the so-called mining farms and to impose for them a special elevated electricity tariff,” he said at the Majilis meeting.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Earlier, the country\u2019s energy minister Magzum Mirzagaliev proposed to limit the consumption volumes of mining data centres<\/a> in the event of electricity shortages.<\/p>\n

This year, many companies involved in cryptocurrency mining have shown interest in Kazakhstan amid the Chinese authorities’ policy toward the industry.<\/p>\n

In June, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the law<\/a>, providing for the introduction of an additional charge for mining.<\/p>\n
