For example, in the United Kingdom, new readings are issued every five minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Combining these scans formed a frame-by-frame video that shows the movement of clouds, similar to the televised visuals used in weather forecast programs.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers fed the data into a deep generative network, resembling a GAN, where the algorithm learned to generate synthetic radar images that continued the sequence of real measurements.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;This is the same as watching a few frames from a movie and guessing what happens next,&#8221; said the study&#8217;s lead researcher Shakir Mohamed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/5zU9F4LfPvARDUDmkzV4nu1ay6Ug5bgZ8TEHH4J79LGQbMpC0OjFp5LuF-rUX4fIo6EEk1TyAr_SuKU2PDbZIMNMQYR5QzfprwV9516Rw41Equd6dGwcFo1Q7kIawNAcnE6z8XkZ=s0\" alt=\"DeepMind has developed an algorithm for predicting rainfall several hours ahead\"\/><figcaption>Comparison of DGMR with actual radar data and two competing methods for predicting heavy rainfall over the eastern United States in April 2019. Data: DeepMind.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To test the algorithm, the team asked 56 forecasters from the UK Met Office to evaluate DGMR in a blind comparison with predictions from competing models. 89% of those surveyed said they preferred DeepMind&#8217;s results.<\/p>\n<p>According to the scientists, short-term precipitation forecasting remains a challenging problem in meteorology. Existing methods rely on large-scale computer modelling of atmospheric physics.
