Amazon has deployed artificial-intelligence\u2013based cameras to measure the performance of delivery drivers. This is reported by The Information<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to media reports, each truck is equipped with four cameras. They can detect traffic violations as well as read drivers’ facial expressions and gestures.<\/p>\n

Algorithms use camera data to compile a driver rating. For each violation the system deducts one demerit point. However, in the event of a serious traffic violation, such as running a red light or ignoring a STOP sign, the rating loses 10 points at once.<\/p>\n

At the end of each week, the company sends evaluation sheets to couriers. Drivers with high scores receive bonuses, those with low scores face fines, and too-poor performance may lead to termination.<\/p>\n

Some drivers considered the system violated their privacy rights and quit. Those remaining have expressed concerns about the system’s accuracy. For example, a phone vibration or driving on a rough road could be interpreted by the system as a call during work time.<\/p>\n

According to drivers, Amazon also tightened the rating criteria. Initially the average stood at 550 points, later it increased to 700.<\/p>\n

In a statement to Business Insider, an Amazon spokesperson said the camera system has helped improve driver safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe piloted this technology on more than two million miles of delivery routes, and the results have led to a significant increase in safety,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to them, thanks to the monitoring system, the number of accidents fell by 48%, STOP sign violations decreased by 20%, drivers wearing seat belts increased by 60%, and distractions from driving decreased by 45%.<\/p>\n

Earlier in March, reports said that Amazon was forcing delivery drivers to sign a consent to surveillance<\/a> in the vehicle.<\/p>\n

In May, the company extended its moratorium on the use of facial-recognition technology by the police<\/a> for an indefinite period.<\/p>\n
