Researchers from the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences reached this conclusion, <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/bvzp78\/researchers-hid-malware-inside-an-ais-neurons-and-it-worked-scarily-well\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\\\">Motherboard<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<!--more-->\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>Experiments with real malware samples showed that replacing about half of the neurons in the <span data-descr=\\\"convolutional neural network for image classification, winner of the ImageNet competition in 2012\\\" class=\\\"old_tooltip\\\">AlexNet<\/span> model with malware yields an accuracy above 93.1%. The algorithm, 178 MB in size, can contain up to 37 MB of malicious software, the authors calculated.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>The researchers tested several models against 58 common antivirus systems, which did not detect the malware.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>&#8220;As neural networks become more widespread, this method will become universal for delivering malware in the future,&#8221; say the authors of the study.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>With this approach, malware is &#8220;disassembled&#8221; and embedded into the neural network. The algorithm then lands on the victim&#8217;s device, where, with the help of a receiver program, it compiles the code into an active virus.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>According to the authors, malware can be stopped if the target device checks the model before running it. It can also be detected using &#8220;traditional methods,&#8221; such as static and dynamic analyses.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>&#8220;Today it would be difficult to detect this with antivirus software, but that&#8217;s only because no one looks there,&#8221; said the researcher and cybersecurity consultant Lukash Oleynik.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>He believes antivirus systems will be able to spot malware extraction from a neural network.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\">\n<p>&#8220;But this is also a problem, because specialized methods for extracting malware from a model [deep neural network] mean that target systems may already be under the control of an attacker,&#8221; added Oleynik.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>The specialist is also convinced that embedding malware in neural networks offers little to attackers.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>In May, researchers from the Maryland Center for Cybersecurity<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/researchers-identify-vulnerability-in-neural-networks-that-increases-their-energy-consumption\"> discovered a vulnerability in neural networks<\/a>, increasing their energy consumption.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>In early May 2021, Microsoft introduced an open-source tool that helps developers<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/microsoft-unveils-open-source-tool-to-test-ai-security\"> test the security of AI systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>In April, Microsoft integrated threat-detection technology from Intel<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/microsoft-and-intel-sharpen-detection-of-hidden-crypto-miners\"> to search for hidden miners<\/a> into the Defender for Endpoint corporate security platform.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>Subscribe to ForkLog&#8217;s news on Telegram:<a href=\\\"https:\/\/t.me\/forklogAI\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\\\"> ForkLog AI<\/a> \u2014 all the news from the world of AI!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Artificial neural networks can carry malware undetectable by antivirus systems.
