American firms are barred from doing business with them without a special license.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Among the sanctions list is the facial-recognition technology developer DeepGlint. In 2014 the startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/funding_round\/deep-glint-series-a--85451514\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0432\u043b\u0435\u043a<\/a> $17 million from the American investment fund Sequoia Capital.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s technology gained international recognition thanks to the facial-recognition vendor test conducted by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. In 2021, DeepGlint claimed the highest accuracy in the test, which it actively used in marketing.<\/p>\n<p>According to media reports, in 2018 DeepGlint together with Chinese authorities founded a facial-recognition laboratory in the capital of Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Commerce sanctioned subsidiaries of military contractors Xinjiang Lianhai Chuangzhi and Chengdu Xiwu Security System Alliance. According to their websites and academic reports, they provide equipment and services for surveillance. For example, Xinjiang Lianhai Chuangzhi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispionline.it\/en\/pubblicazione\/how-china-uses-artificial-intelligence-control-society-23244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u0441\u043e\u0437\u0434\u0430\u043b\u0430<\/a> an AI-based checkpoint system that tracks Uyghurs moving between cities.<\/p>\n<p>Leon Technology, which provides surveillance services, was also listed. Until 2019 it was controlled by the Chinese AI giant SenseTime. However, after the disclosure of information about the use of its technologies against the Uyghur minority, the startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/38aa038a-5f4f-11e9-b285-3acd5d43599e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0430\u043b <\/a>its 51% stake in it.<\/p>\n<p>In May, a programmer-engineer described <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/china-tests-emotion-detection-ai-on-uyghurs\">testing of an emotion-recognition system on Uyghurs<\/a> in police stations in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Facebook blocked a group of Chinese hackers who <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/espionage-against-uyghurs-on-facebook-ransomware-attacks-and-other-cybersecurity-news\"> used a surveillance platform monitoring Uyghur journalists and activists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2020, the Chinese IT firm Alibaba admitted that <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/alibaba-used-ai-to-identify-minorities-uk-shows-queen-elizabeth-ii-deepfake-and-other-ai-news\"> Chinese authorities used its facial-recognition technology to identify the Uyghur minority<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Subscribe to ForkLog News on Telegram:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/forklogAI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> ForkLog AI<\/a> \u2014 all the news from the world of AI!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US Department of Commerce has imposed sanctions on 14 Chinese tech companies for ties to human rights abuses against the Uyghur minority in Xinjiang.
