In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fatf-gafi.org\/publications\/fatfrecommendations\/documents\/second-12-month-review-virtual-assets-vasps.html\">review<\/a> by the organisation.<\/p>\n<p>According to the FATF, digital assets are linked to tax crimes, sanctions evasion, drug or weapon trafficking, as well as various forms of fraud.<\/p>\n<p>During the coronavirus pandemic, a number of FATF members noted a broader use of virtual assets to move and conceal illicit funds. The review refers to one jurisdiction that reported using cryptocurrency to launder proceeds \u201cfrom the sale of a COVID-19 drug\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, analysts<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/experts-identify-a-number-of-bitcoin-addresses-whose-owners-are-selling-counterfeit-covid-certificates\"> Coinfirm <\/a> identified several addresses, whose owners sell fake COVID certificates, stolen vaccines and counterfeit documents.<\/p>\n<p>The FATF also called for \u201ccareful regulation\u201d of stablecoins. Experts fear that with their mass adoption the number of anonymous peer-to-peer transactions through unregistered wallets could rise.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of the review the organisation found that out of 128 jurisdictions \u2014 38 FATF members and 90 representatives of <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A0%D0%B5%D0%B3%D0%B8%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B5_%D0%B3%D1%80%D1%83%D0%BF%D0%BF%D1%8B_%D0%BF%D0%BE_%D1%82%D0%B8%D0%BF%D1%83_%D0%A4%D0%90%D0%A4%D0%A2#:~:text=%D0%92%20%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BE%D1%8F%D1%89%D0%B5%D0%B5%20%D0%B2%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%BC%D1%8F%20%D0%B2%20%D0%BC%D0%B8%D1%80%D0%B5,%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B5%D0%B3%D0%B8%20%D0%B2%20%D0%AE%D0%B6%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B9%20%D0%90%D0%BC%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B5%20(%D0%93%D0%90%D0%A4%D0%98%D0%A1%D0%A3%D0%94)<\/a> \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/fatf-urges-faster-adoption-of-revised-standards-for-the-crypto-industry\"> only 58 have implemented the standards<\/a>. Providers of virtual asset services (VASPs) are regulated in 52 countries, with six banning their operation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/mKU2ocpWD9V7XJsMBw-fm1NbKwLOdVByj7wLM1iS2OxY7wNGv1x4E4hu3JkcWywulgh6UcmyyI_C1E3TX3SUBZcusz7DcJVwuocj_k0MF4_b4FKZaIhlMMo1nPRZpYs9M_kkuGAd\" alt=\"FATF says progress in regulating the cryptocurrency industry is insufficient\"\/><figcaption>Data: FATF review.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;These gaps in implementation mean that there is not yet a global approach to preventing the misuse of virtual assets and VASPs for money laundering or financing of terrorism,&#8221; the document states.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The FATF also noted a willingness from industry representatives to continue engaging with FATF.<\/p>\n<p>In March<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/fatf-includes-defi-in-draft-guidance-for-the-crypto-industry\"> the regulator proposed amendments<\/a> to the guidelines for the cryptocurrency industry. According to the proposal, the regulator&#8217;s scope included decentralised finance and <span data-descr=\"non-fungible tokens\" class=\"old_tooltip\">NFT<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In July, representatives of the cryptocurrency industry and the DeFi sector sent an open letter to FATF with their proposals for regulation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In response to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FATFNews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@FATFNews<\/a> guidance on virtual assets, last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlockchainforEU?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BlockchainforEU<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlockchainAssn?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BlockchainAssn<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bitcoin_ch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bitcoin_ch<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CryptoUKAssoc?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CryptoUKAssoc<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/INATBA_org?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@INATBA_org<\/a> &amp;
