{"id":45068,"date":"2021-06-28T12:01:27","date_gmt":"2021-06-28T09:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=45068"},"modified":"2025-08-31T19:57:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T16:57:17","slug":"ai-uncovers-hidden-links-between-the-milky-way-and-andromeda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/ai-uncovers-hidden-links-between-the-milky-way-and-andromeda\/","title":{"rendered":"AI uncovers hidden links between the Milky Way and Andromeda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania, using machine learning, have created a cosmic map that reveals hidden structures linking galaxies. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artificial-intelligence-models-milky-way-andromeda-collision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Space<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The researchers say the map could yield new insights into the influence of dark matter on the evolution of the Universe, as well as the collision between the Milky Way and <span data-descr=\"the nearest galaxy to the Milky Way, located in the Andromeda constellation and about 772 kiloparsecs from Earth.\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Andromeda<\/span> in about 4.5 billion years. They discovered filaments of dark matter that connect the two galaxies and may affect their merger.<\/p>\n<p>For the creation of the map, researchers trained a machine learning model on a large set of simulations of stellar systems called IllustrisTNG. Data: the study.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When the model was ready, researchers fed it real data from the Cosmicflows-3 catalog, which includes the motions and distribution of 17,000 galaxies within 200 <span data-descr=\"a unit of distance in astronomy; one parsec is about 3.26 light-years or 30.9 trillion kilometres\" class=\"old_tooltip\">megaparsecs<\/span> of the Milky Way. As a result, AI revealed several new filaments that the team plans to study in the future, including connections between our galaxy and Andromeda.<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, the map will become even more accurate after the launch of NASA&#8217;s James Webb Space Telescope in autumn 2021.
