They leave a unique fingerprint on the finished image, which can be used to determine its source.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers&#8217; algorithm not only identifies traits of the generative network but also determines whether the image is a forgery, and which known model created it.<\/p>\n<p>Lead researcher Tal Hassner said that identifying features of unknown models matters because software for creating deepfakes can be easily tuned. This could potentially allow miscreants to erase traces if investigators try to track their actions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNow we can say: \u201cThe image uploaded here and there \u2014 all of them belonged to the same model\u201d,&#8221; said Hassner.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He added that with access to the attacker\u2019s computer or laptop, the algorithm can pinpoint with high accuracy that the forgeries were generated on that equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The researcher compared the deepfake-tracking algorithm to forensic camera-model identification techniques by looking for patterns in the produced image.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHowever, not everyone can create their own camera [\u2026]. While anyone with sufficient expertise and a standard computer can develop their own model for generating deepfakes,\u201d said Hassner.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The company believes the model will help Facebook track down those spreading fake photos and videos on social networks. However, the work remains in the research stage and is not yet ready for deployment, the developers said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in April, researchers from the University of Washington developed<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/researchers-develop-a-deepfake-model-to-forge-satellite-imagery\"> an algorithm that creates realistic fake satellite maps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In April, experts warned that<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/experts-the-number-of-deepfakes-online-doubles-roughly-every-six-months\"> the number of deepfakes online doubles<\/a> every six months.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Bucks County police in Pennsylvania<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/woman-arrested-in-the-united-states-over-deepfake-videos\"> arrested a woman for harassing teenage girls with a deepfake video<\/a>.
