They approached regulators in France, Austria, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-27\/clearview-ai-hit-by-wave-of-european-privacy-complaints?sref=10lNAhZ9https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-05-27\/clearview-ai-hit-by-wave-of-european-privacy-complaints?sref=10lNAhZ9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Activists argue that the company&#8217;s method of collecting and processing information, including facial images it automatically extracts from publicly available websites, breaches European data privacy laws.<\/p>\n<p>They say that Clearview&#8217;s data collection goes beyond what an average user might expect from using services such as Instagram, LinkedIn or YouTube.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cExtracting our unique facial features or even sharing them with the police and other companies is far more than we could have expected as online users,\u201d said Ioannis Kouvakas, Privacy International&#8217;s legal affairs officer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Clearview AI said that the company had never contracted with EU clients and that its services are currently not available in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>However, in February 2021 the Swedish authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/edpb.europa.eu\/news\/national-news\/2021\/swedish-dpa-police-unlawfully-used-facial-recognition-app_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fined<\/a> the national police \u20ac250,000 for using facial recognition technology. The regulator said that law enforcement officers unlawfully processed biometric data for facial recognition using Clearview AI and did not conduct a data protection impact assessment.<\/p>\n<p>In late April 2021<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/us-lawmakers-propose-to-ban-clearview-ai-by-law\"> in the United States proposed to ban Clearview AI<\/a> at the legislative level.<\/p>\n<p>In March activists filed a lawsuit in a California court<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/covid-19-diagnosis-from-cough-sounds-computer-vision-fooled-by-stickers-and-other-ai-news\"> to halt the company&#8217;s activities<\/a> in the state.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Canadian authorities<a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/clearview-ai-faces-trouble-in-canada-pornhub-biometric-verification-initiative-and-other-ai-news\"> asked Clearview AI not to collect photos<\/a> of their citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Subscribe to ForkLog AI on Telegram: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/forklogAI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">ForkLog AI<\/a> \u2014 all the news from the world of AI!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A group of European privacy and digital rights organisations filed legal complaints against Clearview AI.
