The Pentagon is blamed for succumbing to the hype around artificial intelligence. This is what military experts Mark Losito and John Anderson, who specialise in applying AI and machine learning in combat, \u0441\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430\u044e\u0442<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to them, the heightened Pentagon interest in AI distracts the department from core problems hindering broad deployment of the technology.<\/p>\n

The experts are not concerned that the government could be deceived by malefactors selling heavily publicised AI systems. They are more worried that these technologies will not work and the military will lose interest in artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a result, a feedback loop will deprive AI of priority as a critically important weapon system. This is also known as the \u2018AI winter\u2019,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Losito and Anderson believe that the US does not test these programs adequately against real needs in a constantly changing battlespace.<\/p>\n

They also believe that the Pentagon no longer considers AI in narrow terms tied to a specific project.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIn 2025, we will either hear from the department more banal statements about how big AI can be, or real feedback from commanders about how good it actually is,\u201d the experts said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The authors argue that government should not stop, and urge it not to treat AI as just another technology.<\/p>\n

In late March 2021, the Pentagon urged to expand the use of artificial intelligence<\/a> to avoid losing to China and Russia.<\/p>\n

In early March, the National Security AI Commission published a report on preserving the United States’ technological dominance<\/a> with recommendations for government and business.<\/p>\n

A week later, the Chinese government presented a five-year plan to accelerate the development of advanced technologies<\/a>, including artificial intelligence and quantum computing.<\/p>\n

In 2020, China took the lead<\/a> in the number of AI-related scientific publications.<\/p>\n
