Since the beginning, we have designed Trezor (both in hardware and software) to be as open as possible. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ith6lAbMIY\">https:\/\/t.co\/Ith6lAbMIY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Trezor (@Trezor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Trezor\/status\/1387863392984182787?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 29, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>On 29 April, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/k78a53\/the-irs-wants-help-hacking-cryptocurrency-hardware-wallets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vice<\/a> reported that the IRS&#8217;s digital forensics division placed a tender for a universal solution to break into hardware wallets that could be of interest for investigations.<\/p>\n<p>At present, experts are not able to effectively \u201ctrace movements of funds\u201d or \u201cconfiscate millions and billions of dollars,\u201d the agency says in a document.<\/p>\n<p>Security expert Andrew Tierney questioned the feasibility of the IRS plans in comments to the publication.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u00abHardware wallets are becoming quite secure. It may be possible to find vulnerabilities in some of them, but discovering ready-made exploits will be very difficult. Another problem is the absence of funds in the wallet itself. There are simply keys. The owner can move coins if they learn that access to the wallet may have been compromised\u00bb<\/em>, \u2014 he explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nicolas Weaver, a senior research scientist at UC Berkeley, called the initiative an \u201coverreach.\u201d In his words, a wallet owner is faced with a choice: either the passphrase or a prison sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The creator of the Trezor hardware wallets said that they follow the philosophy of open-source software development. According to the developers, this rules out any possibility of cooperating with authorities to add a secret hardware or software backdoor.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u00abThousands of experts watch every move we make, checking every change to the code. It functions as an ideal faultless mechanism. No one would use a compromised version\u00bb<\/em>, \u2014 they explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Trezor stated that there is no 100% guarantee against hacking. In Trezor they signed the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A1%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BB%D1%8C%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B2%D0%BE_%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B9%D0%BA%D0%B8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">canary certificate<\/a>.
