Researchers at the University of Cambridge have created an online game, Emojify<\/a>, which demonstrates the capabilities of emotion-recognition technology. With it, the researchers hope to raise awareness of the technology and foster broad discussion of its use, The Guardian reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The first game demonstrates emotion recognition capabilities using a computer’s web camera. The user can portray emotions such as happiness, anger, or disgust, and the system will attempt to guess them.<\/p>\n

Another game shows the limitations of such systems in recognizing context in images.<\/p>\n

Dr. Alexa Hagerty, the project lead and a researcher at the University of Cambridge, said that their aim is to raise public awareness of the capabilities and limitations of the technology.<\/p>\n

\\”It’s a form of facial recognition, but more advanced, because it doesn’t just identify people; it reads the emotions, the inner feelings, from our faces,\\” said Hagerty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to her, the technology is used worldwide for a variety of purposes: from evaluating customer service to security at airports. Hagerty also noted that despite the advantages of emotion recognition for various sectors, its development and use must take into account such threats as accuracy, bias, and ethics.<\/p>\n

Earlier in late January 2021, Amnesty International urged ban face recognition<\/a> in public places. According to representatives of the organisation, biometric identification of people using street surveillance cameras is a gross intrusion into citizens’ privacy.<\/p>\n

In February, the Minneapolis City Council banned<\/a> the use of this tool by police. Similar restrictions were introduced in Portland, San Francisco, Oakland and Boston.<\/p>\n

In early 2019, a Black American spent ten days<\/a> in jail due to a face-recognition system error. The man intends to sue the local police department.<\/p>\n
