A court in Paris will begin hearing the appeal in the case of Russian national Alexander Vinnik, who was found guilty of money laundering.<\/span><\/p>\n

As reported by <\/span>TASS<\/span><\/a>, preliminary hearings are expected to last until June 8.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vinnik’s lawyer has filed a motion to appoint an additional IT expert to the proceedings. The expert will study FBI materials on which the prosecution bases its case.<\/span><\/p>\n

\\”These are copies of a computer’s hard drive, as well as data from a mobile phone allegedly belonging to Alexander Vinnik,\\” the lawyer said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He added that to date no examinations have been carried out, \\”except for the rapid assessment by experts engaged by the investigation, who admitted that it was conducted quickly due to lack of time and resources.\\” Neither the investigation nor the defence had access to the original data, the lawyer stressed.<\/span><\/p>\n

As previously reported, a French court sentenced Vinnik, suspected of laundering at least $4 billion through the cryptocurrency exchange BTC-e, <\/span>to five years in prison and a \u20ac100 000 fine<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vinnik’s lawyers <\/span>filed an appeal<\/span><\/a> in December.<\/span><\/p>\n
