{"id":36732,"date":"2021-02-19T15:29:28","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T13:29:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=36732"},"modified":"2025-08-29T07:49:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T04:49:09","slug":"hong-kong-plans-to-ban-retail-investors-from-trading-bitcoin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/hong-kong-plans-to-ban-retail-investors-from-trading-bitcoin\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong plans to ban retail investors from trading Bitcoin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hong Kong authorities have tabled legislative proposals that would prohibit retail investors from trading Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and would require exchanges to obtain licences, according to <a href=\\\"https:\/\/news.8btc.com\/hong-kong-plans-to-ban-retail-investors-from-trading-cryptocurrency\\\" target=\\\"_blank\\\" rel=\\\"noopener\\\">8btc<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\\n<\/p>\n<p>The Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau published the proposal in November 2020 for consultation with industry and the public. After three months the document became a bill and could become law this year, the publication noted.<\/p>\n<p>\\n<\/p>\n<p>The proposed law would require trading platforms, custodians, and providers of virtual-asset financing services to apply for a licence with the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). One of the requirements would be to serve \u201conly professional investors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\\n<\/p>\n<p>Industry insiders say that if the rules are adopted, companies and fintech professionals will lose interest in Hong Kong and relocate to countries with more favourable regulation.<\/p>\n<p>\\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe industry is still in an early stage of development, and regulators should provide greater space for innovation and entrepreneurship. Limiting trading to professional investors only could undermine Hong Kong&#8217;s competitiveness relative to other markets such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and, in particular, Singapore,\u201d says Flex Yang, CEO of Babel Finance, a crypto-asset management firm.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\\n<\/p>\n<p>In explaining the requirements of the new rules, the Bureau cited the need to comply with FATF guidelines.
