The rapid rise <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/dogecoin-climbs-200-in-a-day-overtaking-eos-in-market-capitalisation\">was driven by members of the r\/SatoshiStreetBets community<\/a> on Reddit. The subreddit calls itself the crypto analogue to the r\/WallStreetBets group, which allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/skybridge-capital-chief-calls-gamestop-stock-pump-a-positive-sign-for-bitcoin\">stands behind the triple-digit rise in GameStop stock<\/a> despite the expectations of major market players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe favorite cryptocurrency\u201d was supported by Elon Musk, who posted a tweet hinting at it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/a6kmk0PEgM\">pic.twitter.com\/a6kmk0PEgM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1354924057825837060?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 28, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Later he posted a tweet that users linked to Bitcoin and Dogecoin:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cLooking back, it was inevitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The phrase <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/elon-musk-tweet-immortalised-on-the-bitcoin-blockchain\">immortalised on the blockchain<\/a> of the first cryptocurrency, was placed in block #668 197.<\/p>\n<p>With a new price record, DOGE vaulted into the top ten cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation, but after a correction it dropped out. At the time of writing the coin sits in 16th place in CoinGecko\u2019s ranking.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the rally, it was invested in by porn star Mia Khalifa. At the time of the tweet, users guessed that she did this at the price peak. Khalifa later confirmed their guesses. DOGE trades around $0.03.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, January 30, XRP from Ripple suddenly <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/xrp-climbs-60-to-reclaim-fourth-largest-crypto-by-market-capitalization\">jumped 60%<\/a> and surpassed $0.50. The token returned to the fourth place by total market value. This came amid the company filing its response to the SEC lawsuit, though on Twitter some suggested that \u201cXRP used the same rocket fuel as Dogecoin yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_123568\" style=\"width: 1266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123568\" class=\"wp-image-123568 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-372.png\" alt=\"Week in review: Elon Musk pumps Bitcoin, and Reddit users push Dogecoin to a new high\" width=\"1256\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-372.png 1256w, https:\/\/u1f987.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2-372-300x143.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1256px) 100vw, 1256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-123568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Data: CoinGecko.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>By the end of the week, the cryptocurrency market capitalisation stood at just over $1 trillion, with Bitcoin\u2019s dominance index at 61.2%.<\/p>\n<h2>Robinhood at the centre of the GameStop, Dogecoin and Reddit traders scandal<\/h2>\n<p>The crypto-friendly platform Robinhood <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/robinhood-at-the-centre-of-the-gamestop-dogecoin-and-reddit-trader-scandal\">found itself at the centre of a financial scandal<\/a>, which threatens a review of Wall Street\u2019s market practices.<\/p>\n<p>The situation around GameStop and AMC Entertainment shares, hedge funds, and the Reddit community has drawn attention from the US Congress and prosecutors\u2019 offices.<\/p>\n<p>On November 29, 2020, a member of the r\/WallStreetBets subreddit discovered that Melvin Capital held short positions in GameStop (GME). After this, users decided to buy these shares to prevent large players from sinking the company.<\/p>\n<p>On December 1, the price of GME hovered around $16, but from January 12 it began to rise sharply. The peak came on January 28, when the New York Stock Exchange price exceeded $469. The Wall Street Journal reports that as of January 25 the fund had lost 30% of its capital. It was backed by market maker Citadel and hedge fund Point 72 Asset Management with $2.7 billion. The total losses of short-sellers on GME this month are estimated at over $19.75 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Citadel\u2019s close ties to Robinhood include the mobile platform. In June, a subsidiary of the market maker accounted for more than 35% of Robinhood\u2019s revenue, according to the Financial Times. Many r\/WallStreetBets participants used the same platform to buy GameStop shares.<\/p>\n<p>On January 28, Robinhood restricted trading of several assets, including GME and AMC.<\/p>\n<p>In a Robinhood blog, the company promised to reintroduce restricted trading on January 29. One r\/WallStreetBets participant said the limit was up to five shares.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, January 29, Robinhood halted deposits and cryptocurrency trading due to an \u201cabnormal market situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Robinhood had blocked trading of Dogecoin (DOGE).<\/p>\n<p>The community erupted with anger at the platform\u2019s actions. Subreddit participants organised a campaign to lower the Robinhood app\u2019s rating in Google Play Store.<\/p>\n<p>However the situation did not only bring negative reviews for Robinhood. On January 28 a group of investors filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, accusing it of \u201cwillful and conscious\u201d depriving private traders of the opportunity to invest.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Banking Committee chair Sherrod Brown called for a review of stock-market rules. Representative Paul Gosar urged the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the GameStop and Robinhood incident.<\/p>\n<p>The SEC said it would take a closer look at companies like Robinhood. The agency did not name the platform directly, but hinted at prices of \u201ccertain stocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Grayscale files for six new investment trusts<\/h2>\n<p>On January 27, asset manager Grayscale Investments <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/grayscale-applies-to-register-six-new-investment-trusts\">filed applications<\/a> to register six new trusts: based on Aave, Polkadot, Cosmos, Monero, EOS and Cardano.<\/p>\n<p>The requests were addressed to Delaware\u2019s Division of Corporations. The investment products were registered by Delaware Trust Company (DTC). According to the documents, DTC is Grayscale\u2019s legal representative in the state.<\/p>\n<p>In December the company filed applications to register five new trusts based on Chainlink, Tezos, Basic Attention Token, Decentraland and Livepeer.<\/p>\n<p>The Grayscale head Michael Sonnenshein noted that obtaining approval does not necessarily imply the appearance of an investment product on the market.<\/p>\n<p>On January 25 the company said it had donated $1 million to Coin Center, an organisation promoting and defending the cryptocurrency industry\u2019s interests. It also pledged to raise up to $1 million in donations during February 2021.<\/p>\n<h2>Coinbase to go public via direct listing<\/h2>\n<p>The largest American cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase said it would go public via direct listing.<\/p>\n<p>In December 2020 the platform filed with the SEC an S-1 form for an initial public offering (IPO).<\/p>\n<p>On January 28, 2021, Coinbase representatives clarified that the company would go public via direct listing of Class A common stock.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe S-1 form will become effective after the SEC completes its review process, taking into account market and other conditions,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Ripple responds to SEC suit, and Brad Garlinghouse calls 2020 a landmark year for the company<\/h2>\n<p>Ripple <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/ripple-asks-the-sec-why-bitcoin-and-ethereum-are-not-securities\">filed a response<\/a> to the SEC lawsuit. It asserts that <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/sec-files-suit-against-ripple\">the accusations of issuing unregistered securities<\/a> are based on an \u201cunprecedented and ill-considered legal theory.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAmong other things, this theory ignores the fact that XRP performs a number of functions not characteristic of securities, \u2014 says the 93-page document. \u2014 For example, XRP acts as a medium of exchange \u2014 the digital currency is currently used in cross-border and domestic transactions, moving value between jurisdictions and facilitating the settlement of trades. This is not a security and the SEC has no authority to regulate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ripple sought information on why the agency does not classify Ethereum, which \u201calso performs a function as a medium of exchange,\u201d as a security.<\/p>\n<p>The document also mentions \u201cChina\u2019s control\u201d over Bitcoin and the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation.<\/p>\n<p>The company argues that the regulator\u2019s claims require swift progress, since XRP has lost almost half of its market value since the lawsuit. As a result, retail holders of the token, not affiliated with Ripple, have suffered losses the SEC claims to protect.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe SEC\u2019s mission includes maintaining order in the markets. However, the agency\u2019s overreach has sown chaos,\u201d said Ripple.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Against regulatory headwinds, legal actions against the company and its leadership continue to pile up. A Florida resident filed a class-action suit against Ripple, accusing the firm and CEO Brad Garlinghouse of violating state securities laws and illicit enrichment. The investor put about $100 into XRP, which turned into $50 after a month.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the head of Ripple says the year just ended was \u201cremarkable\u201d for the company, whose products remain in high demand from clients. RippleNet processed more than 3 million transactions \u2014 five times more than a year earlier. The On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) payment system, in which XRP is used as an intermediate currency, showed a 12-fold year-on-year growth. The annual transaction volume was around $2.4 billion, Garlinghouse notes.<\/p>\n<p>RippleNet\u2019s General Manager Ashish Birla said the company <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/ripple-says-it-is-collaborating-with-central-banks-on-cbdc-development\">is in talks to use the XRP Ledger<\/a> as the basis for national digital currencies (CBDCs). He believes this would be a \u201cserious boost for the adoption of Ripple\u2019s technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Tatneft sees mining of cryptocurrencies at the enterprise as a promising avenue<\/h2>\n<p>The Russian oil company Tatneft <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/tatneft-sees-cryptocurrency-mining-at-its-facilities-as-a-promising-venture\">expressed interest<\/a> in the possibility of earning additional profit from cryptocurrency mining. The corresponding project won at a youth forum organised by the company.<\/p>\n<p>The idea\u2019s author is Irek Kiramov, an engineer at the network control center. He says one of Tatneft\u2019s problems is an excess of power capacity.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn mining, the main cost item \u2014 more than 85% \u2014 is electricity. You can diversify production and mine not only oil but also cryptocurrency. For the company it could become another growth point and bring additional profit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Kiramov has already registered the project in the automated Edison system and plans to participate in its implementation.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 young specialists took part in the forum. Tatneft selected the top six projects it is prepared to implement.<\/p>\n<h2>A bug in Apple devices exposes access to Bitcoin wallets<\/h2>\n<p>A vulnerability discovered in Apple devices <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/bug-in-apple-devices-could-grant-access-to-bitcoin-wallets\">allows remote access<\/a>. It potentially threatens cryptocurrency wallet users.<\/p>\n<p>Apple has already released updates for iOS 14.4 and iPadOS 14.4. They are available for models from iPhone 6s, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4 and iPod touch (7th generation).<\/p>\n<p>Coinbase\u2019s lead engineer Pete Kim urged Apple users to urgently update their OS to protect their cryptocurrency wallets.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, there is no evidence that the vulnerabilities were used to target cryptocurrency users specifically.<\/p>\n<h2>Jihan Wu steps down from Bitmain CEO role<\/h2>\n<p>Bitmain co-founder Jihan Wu <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/jihan-wu-steps-down-as-bitmain-chief-executive\">announced his departure<\/a> from the company\u2019s CEO position after protracted disputes with Micree Zhan.<\/p>\n<p>Under previously <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/bitmain-shareholders-approve-terms-of-jihan-wus-departure\">approved by shareholders<\/a> agreements, Zhan bought almost half of Wu\u2019s Bitmain shares for $600 million.
