Data: grayscale.co, <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/2020-in-numbers-bitcoin-records-the-defi-boom-and-institutional-adoption\">ForkLog&#8217;s 2020 report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, the trend of investing in Bitcoin as a hedge against risk began with MicroStrategy, which in August 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-becomes-the-first-nasdaq-listed-company-to-invest-part-of-its-capital-in-bitcoin\">purchased 21,454 BTC<\/a> for more than $250 million. A month later, the Nasdaq-listed company invested <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-bets-another-175-million-on-bitcoin\">another $175 million<\/a> in Bitcoin, and in December of last year \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-invests-another-650-million-in-bitcoin\">an additional $650 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Total MicroStrategy has invested $1.12 billion in Bitcoin and now owns 70,470 BTC (more than $2.5 billion at the time of writing). In December, Ruffer Investments bought 45,000 BTC for $744 million.
