Over the past week alone, the amount of bitcoins held in its wallets fell by 38.4% \u2014 to 120,889 BTC (~$1.368 billion).<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the analytics company CryptoQuant, BitMEX slid from fourth to sixth place on this metric.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_112844\" style=\"width: 776px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112844\" class=\"wp-image-112844 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/photo_2020-10-10_06-07-03.jpg\" alt=\"BitMEX bitcoin reserves fell nearly 40% in a week\" width=\"766\" height=\"878\" srcset=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/photo_2020-10-10_06-07-03.jpg 766w, https:\/\/u1f987.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/photo_2020-10-10_06-07-03-262x300.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-112844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoquant.com\/overview\/full\/206?window=day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">CryptoQuant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The absolute leader in bitcoin reserves is Coinbase \u2014 its wallets hold 861,117 BTC (~$9.74 billion).<\/p>\n<p>Next with a substantial lead are Huobi Global (296,856 BTC), Binance (292,274 BTC), Gemini (171,350 BTC) and Bitfinex (127,404 BTC).<\/p>\n<p>On October 1, it emerged that the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the U.S. Department of Justice had filed charges against the BitMEX cryptocurrency derivatives exchange and its owners. They are accused of operating an unregistered trading platform and violating Commission rules.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations against BitMEX led to a drop in bitcoin\u2019s price to around $10,500 and a substantial outflow of funds from the once-leading crypto derivatives exchange. Open interest on BitMEX over several hours <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/open-interest-on-bitmex-falls-amid-regulatory-troubles-with-u-s-authorities\">fell<\/a> to 61,869 BTC, below its annual low.<\/p>\n<p>On the same day, October 1, BitMEX CTO Samuel Reed was arrested on charges by the U.S. DOJ for violating the Bank Secrecy Act and for \u201cwillful failure to implement robust anti-money-laundering countermeasures at BitMEX.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On October 8, BitMEX <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/arthur-hayes-steps-down-as-bitmex-ceo-after-u-s-regulators-lawsuit\">announced<\/a> a management shake-up. Arthur Hayes and Samuel Reed left the posts of CEO and CTO respectively. The head of business development Greg Dwyer took a leave of absence.
