Malicious actors hacked one of the official Twitter accounts of India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi. On the page of the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, they posted a series of tweets with a fake appeal to transfer funds in cryptocurrency. This was reported by Nikkei Asia Review<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The @narendramodi_in account has 2.5 million followers. Modi’s personal Twitter account, which is followed by more than 61 million people, was not affected. It is not definitively known whether anyone made transfers and in what amount.<\/p>\n

The fund’s resources go toward assisting families of those killed in natural disasters, including floods, cyclones and earthquakes. Donations are typically in fiat currencies.<\/p>\n

A Twitter spokesperson said the company had taken steps to safeguard the account. As of writing, the compromised posts have been removed.<\/p>\n

That breach came about a month and a half after a high-profile attack in which the pages of Elon Musk, Bill Gates and other celebrities were hacked. In that incident, the attacker managed to obtain about $120,000 in BTC from victims.<\/p>\n

Earlier it became known that the 17-year-old Graham Clarke, accused of organizing the attack, was charged with<\/a> 30 counts. If convicted, he could face up to 200 years in prison.<\/p>\n
