By 2024, the DAT wave had spread to other assets \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/standard-chartered-ethereum-treasuries-offer-more-attractive-alternative-to-etfs\">Ethereum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/classover-tgl-and-k-wave-media-to-pour-hundreds-of-millions-into-solana-bitcoin-and-ethereum\">Solana<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/data\/treasuries\/crypto-treasuries\/top-companies-by-crypto-holdings-usd\/embed\" title=\"Top DATs by Crypto Holdings (USD) (Including Strategy)\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Proponents argue that such structures &#8220;enhance ecosystem visibility&#8221; and create long-term value.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Companies managing crypto treasuries drive token prices up, attracting users, developers, and fostering the emergence of <span data-descr=\"\u0434\u0435\u0446\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043b\u0438\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0436\u0435\u043d\u0438\u044f\" class=\"old_tooltip\">dapps<\/span>. All this can significantly enhance the visibility of the coin&#8217;s ecosystem, especially among traditional investors and institutional players,&#8221; noted Upexi&#8217;s chief strategist Brian Rudick.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, critics, including The Block&#8217;s director of research, Steven Zheng, point to the risks of conflicts of interest. According to him, many DATs are formed with insider involvement, who may purchase tokens at a discount before public announcements.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Controversial Deals\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>A company associated with Donald Trump&#8217;s family, World Liberty Financial, raised $1.5 billion to create a treasury for the WLFI token, which is not traded on exchanges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Project co-founder Zak Witkoff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2025\/08\/12\/world-liberty-financial-co-founders-on-1-point-5-billion-digital-coin-deal-growth-of-usd1-stablecoin.html\">stated<\/a> that the coins were acquired through ALT5 at a 64% discount from the &#8220;assumed market price&#8221; ($0.2 versus $0.56). Eric Trump joined ALT5&#8217;s board, strengthening ties between the project and the administration.<\/p>\n<p>A similar story occurred with TON Strategy (formerly Verb Technology), which <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/ton-drops-8-following-verb-technologys-reserve-announcement\">announced<\/a> raising $558 million to purchase Toncoin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The deal involved companies Kingsway Capital, Ribbit Capital, and Vy Capital, who are also early investors in TON. Kingsway&#8217;s CEO, Manuel Stotz, also serves as the president of the TON Foundation and executive chairman of the newly created DAT \u2014 TON Strategy.<\/p>\n<p>According to an investor presentation filed with the <span data-descr=\"\u041a\u043e\u043c\u0438\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f \u043f\u043e \u0446\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u043c \u0431\u0443\u043c\u0430\u0433\u0430\u043c \u0438 \u0431\u0438\u0440\u0436\u0430\u043c \u0421\u0428\u0410\" class=\"old_tooltip\">SEC<\/span>, TON Strategy will be able to buy Toncoin at a 40% discount thanks to &#8220;connections in the TON ecosystem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some experts say such closed-loop deals are not new to the industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Information considered a grey area in the crypto industry may well be deemed insider information in the stock world,&#8221; said an anonymous source to The Block.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Critics of DAT have also highlighted deals involving other well-known industry figures. For instance, the family office of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao invested $500 million in transforming CEA Industries into a BNB treasury. Justin Sun became its advisor. The firm positions itself as the largest corporate holder of TRX.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In July, biotechnology company Sonnet BioTherapeutics rebranded, changed its name to Hyperliquid Strategies, and began accumulating the HYPE token.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before the DAT announcement, the company&#8217;s shares were at $1. However, two weeks before the public announcement, Sonnet sold convertible bonds worth $2 million to unnamed accredited investors. After this, the stock prices began to rise rapidly, gaining over 300%, and eventually reached $10.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the firm acquired 12.6 million tokens for $583 million with the support of Paradigm. It later emerged that 98% of Sonnet&#8217;s shares are owned by Rorschach I LLC, an entity affiliated with Paradigm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expert Opinions\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Komodo&#8217;s CTO Kadan Stadelmann described all the examples as &#8220;the very circular economy that gives crypto skeptics fodder for years to come.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;When a treasury company takes money from venture funds or a development fund to buy tokens that those same funds already own, it&#8217;s not asset management \u2014 it&#8217;s creating liquidity for an exit. It&#8217;s self-dealing disguised as capital deployment,&#8221; he noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Alluvial&#8217;s CEO Mara Schmidt took a more optimistic stance. She said the drive of crypto projects to create public companies represents an opportunity to raise accountability levels.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Public companies are required to adhere to strict disclosure requirements and maintain transparent policies regarding conflicts of interest. When such organizations participate in crypto treasuries, they bring a level of accountability that can raise standards for the entire ecosystem,&#8221; she emphasized.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/buterin-backs-corporate-ethereum-treasuries-warns-of-risks\">supported<\/a> corporate treasuries in the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization but warned of risks.
