This estimate was provided by on-chain researcher ZachXBT.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Have not seen numbers publicly reported anywhere before but I estimate Coinbase support social engineering \/ phishing scams have resulted in $100M-$150M stolen in just the past year from its users.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ZachXBT (@zachxbt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zachxbt\/status\/1849009469910307048?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 23, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The statistics were shared in response to a tweet by a user named MistTrack, who recounted a near-miss with a fraudulent email purportedly from Coinbase support.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>\u201cThese scammers are getting better and better. Almost fell for it, but I never forget to check the sender&#8217;s email address,\u201d he wrote.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>ZachXBT noted that he has not seen any report from the company itself on this matter, and his estimate is based on the number of victims who have sought help.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\n<cite>\u201cThis is primarily the fault of the US government for very weak consumer data protection laws (phone numbers and such), as other exchanges outside the US usually do not face this scale of problem,\u201d he stated.<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The on-chain researcher opined that Coinbase should \u201cfight for its users and legally pursue some unscrupulous providers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Indian citizen Chirag Thumar was sentenced to five years in prison for orchestrating a $20 million cryptocurrency scam involving a fake Coinbase website.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the bitcoin exchange was included in a list of American companies that <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/study-reveals-coinbase-as-top-target-for-scammers-among-us-crypto-brands\">scammers most frequently impersonate<\/a> to deceive their victims.
