The term is widely thought to have entered public discourse then.<\/p>\n<p>As the crypto community embraced the idea, its name evolved. Messari analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/messari.io\/report\/decentralized-social-protocol-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">use<\/a> \u201cDecentralised Social\u201d in their reports; in CoinMarketCap\u2019s token categories \u201cCommunications and Social Media\u201d is <a href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/view\/communications-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">used<\/a>; on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/en\/categories\/socialfi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Coingecko<\/a> it is \u201cSocialFi\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ethereum has <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/social-networks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">taken<\/a> a more systematic approach, focusing on the structure and coherence of the concept and proposing the term \u201cDecentralised Social Networks\u201d. This piece delves into the field, whose growth since 2023 has been forecast by leading funds and analysts.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How DeSoc works<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Decentralised social networks are a system of blockchain-based decentralised applications (dapps) and their infrastructure protocols that let users publish and distribute content without censorship and with the possibility of monetisation.<\/p>\n<p>These dapps also let users take part in building social platforms and their evolution via DAOs, including physical infrastructure\u2014much as in <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/tokens-for-noise-and-a-web3-alternative-to-google-maps-the-most-interesting-depin-projects\">DePIN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DeSoc should not be conflated with decentralised social media. The latter are the interfaces with which users interact.<\/p>\n<p>Social interaction in DeSoc is enabled by a variety of infrastructure protocols:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>user identification and reputation;<\/li>\n<li>messaging;<\/li>\n<li>content monetisation;<\/li>\n<li>founder-economy tooling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/messari.io\/report\/the-open-social-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">report<\/a> on openness and transparency in social networks, Messari\u2019s analysts argued that the cryptosphere and blockchain are a civic category, not merely a new kind of finance. To describe DeSoc they proposed a four-layer model.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Data Layer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This can be divided into smart contracts and content-management systems. The former act as a project\u2019s back end, with contract code serving as the server side of applications\u2014storing and computing transactions and defining business logic. The latter are often standalone <span data-descr=\"Layer-1 solutions\" class=\"old_tooltip\">L1<\/span> and L2 networks designed for storing and managing data. They typically use decentralised storage protocols such as IPFS.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Social Primitive Layer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here lie the basic elements and concepts that underpin social connection and interaction\u2014the heart of DeSoc. Primitives include links between participants (friendship, subscription, following), interactions with content (likes, comments, reposts) and various forms of virtual and real-world influence (reputation, status, rewards). As links between primitives are established, a <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%25D0%25A1%25D0%25BE%25D1%2586%25D0%25B8%25D0%25B0%25D0%25BB%25D1%258C%25D0%25BD%25D1%258B%25D0%25B9_%25D0%25B3%25D1%2580%25D0%25B0%25D1%2584\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">social graph<\/a> emerges. For instance, in Lens Protocol, content and follower data are represented as NFTs, and any user profile can form a DAO.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Algorithm Layer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Moderation and content-policy governance take place here. Once the social graph is created, the information it contains is handled by algorithms that, in DeSoc, are relatively democratic, transparent and community-governed. Owing to lower speed than in <span data-descr=\"Traditional social networks\" class=\"old_tooltip\">TradSoc<\/span>, results can be less efficient.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Front-end Layer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is where the end product is built, assembled from various protocols across the stack. In practice it is a dapp with its own interface\u2014the surface users touch.<\/p>\n<p>An essential component of modern Web3 to add to this social stack is user identification. In DeSoc it is enabled by dedicated protocols such as <a href=\"https:\/\/galxe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Galxe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/layer3.xyz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Layer3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ens.domains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ENS<\/a> and universal crypto wallets (such as MetaMask), which can be treated as passports that let users port data to other applications at will.<\/p>\n<p>Also relevant are the possibilities of SBTs, where the \u201cSoul\u201d refers to the account and wallet of the owner of this non-transferable NFT. Their functions and prospects for DeSoc include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>users (\u201cSouls\u201d) hold SBTs that can be non-transferable, potentially revocable and initially public. Later, the researchers believe, private use-cases will become more realistic;<\/li>\n<li>SBTs can track affiliations, memberships and credentials such as educational documents, employment history, or hashes of texts and artworks;<\/li>\n<li>SBTs may be issued by the user, and can also be attested by other participants in the social graph who are counterparties in those relationships;<\/li>\n<li>if a holder attempts to recover lost SBTs, other participants can vouch for their identity and community membership.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many DeSoc platforms issue their own tokens, providing monetisation in the absence of advertising revenue and unlocking extra features for users\u2014from in-app purchases to tipping influencers.<\/p>\n<p>In sum, DeSoc platforms offer several notable advantages:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>crypto-native orientation.<\/strong> DeSoc offers improved monetisation for creators via NFTs and crypto payments without resorting to advertising;<\/li>\n<li><strong>open source.<\/strong> Unlike TradSoc, DeSoc code is transparent and can be audited and improved by any enthusiast, aligning the interests of builders and users;<\/li>\n<li><strong>DAO and SBT integration.<\/strong> This brings more order to social networks and shifts governance power to user-led organisations;<\/li>\n<li><strong>no single point of failure.<\/strong> Thanks to blockchain, DeSoc is harder to attack, protecting accounts from hacks and other malicious actions;<\/li>\n<li><strong>privacy.<\/strong> Authentication via, for example, ENS ensures a sufficient level of anonymity. Instead of handing over information easily linked to your real identity (phone numbers, email), DeSoc uses identification features and social primitives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DeSoc projects at work today<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lens.xyz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>Lens Protocol<\/strong><\/a>. A social graph launched in 2022 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/aave.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Aave Companies<\/a> team on Polygon. Its distinguishing trait is modularity, enabling the portability of all user data as NFTs across platforms and allowing the creation of diverse decentralised social networks on top. Apps built on Lens include Lenster, Lenstube, Memester and others.<\/p>\n<p>Each account created on Lens is an NFT that stores the history of all posts, comments and other content. A ProfileNFT can be minted on the official Lens Protocol website\u2014the analogue of registering an account on X or Facebook. Users can trade their Lens Protocol Profiles (LPP) on secondary markets such as <a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/collection\/lens-protocol-profiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">OpenSea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Development is ongoing. In April 2023 the team released the Bonsai beta\u2014a DeSoc scaling solution\u2014and in July launched the protocol\u2019s second version, which includes the ERC-6551 token standard and various smart-contract improvements. The Lens Protocol team also built an encrypted messaging module based on <a href=\"https:\/\/xmtp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">XMTP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On 27 February 2024 the project <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LensProtocol\/status\/1762572454025683302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">removed<\/a> its registration queue and opened to all, triggering an influx of new users. By April their number exceeded 250,000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.farcaster.xyz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>Farcaster<\/strong><\/a>. A Web3 social network akin to X. Founded in 2020 by former Coinbase employees, it runs on OP Mainnet. Farcaster uses a hybrid architecture, storing user identity on-chain while keeping posts and interactions off-chain. With active support from Vitalik Buterin, the platform has grown rapidly; Farcaster Frames, which turn posts into interactive experiences, have helped popularise it.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to OP Stack, building apps atop Farcaster is straightforward; around 20 exist already. One of the most popular is <a href=\"https:\/\/warpcast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Warpcast<\/a>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/dune.com\/pixelhack\/farcaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Dune<\/a> data, in April 2024 the average number of daily \u201ccasts\u201d on Farcaster exceeded 400,000, with the user count nearing 290,000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mask.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>Mask Network<\/strong><\/a>. A DeSoc platform on Ethereum whose key functions are peer-to-peer crypto-asset exchange and \u201cmasks\u201d that protect privacy online. The MASK token\u2019s market capitalisation is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/en\/coins\/mask-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">valued<\/a> at over $500m.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>CyberConnect<\/strong><\/a>. According to the team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.cyber.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">documentation<\/a>, the project is building the first L2 network for future social media and aims to offer simple access to Web3 tools. The Cyber network is developed with tooling from EigenLayer and OP Mainnet in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/altlayer-introduces-alt-token-staking\">AltLayer<\/a>. The CYBER token\u2019s capitalisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/en\/coins\/cyberconnect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">exceeds<\/a> $150m.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deso.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>DeSo Protocol<\/strong><\/a>. A layer-1 blockchain purpose-built for decentralised social networks, offering a broad toolset to build and run all elements of DeSoc. The developers claim the lowest transaction costs among blockchains: as of 21 March 2024 they <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/desoprotocol\/status\/1770840277298602259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">were<\/a> about $0.000017. The project\u2019s DESO token has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/en\/coins\/deso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">market capitalisation<\/a> above $300m.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d.tube\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>Dtube<\/strong><\/a>. A decentralised video-sharing platform that mirrors YouTube\u2019s functionality while prioritising privacy, security and freedom of speech. In 2022 it transformed into a DAO. It uses the Steem blockchain and supports IPFS, BitTorrent and Skynet for data storage and distribution, ensuring content is not centrally controlled and is resistant to censorship.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dmail.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>Dmail Network<\/strong><\/a>. A DeSoc platform that provides secure email communication between different Web3 identifiers, such as blockchain addresses, crypto wallets and <span data-descr=\"Decentralised identifiers\" class=\"old_tooltip\">DID<\/span>. Its main application, Dmail DApp, lets users create an email account based on a Web3 identifier (for example, a network address) and exchange messages with Web3 and Web 2.0 mail services. The platform also offers products for influencers and marketers to engage audiences more effectively. The project\u2019s DMAIL token has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/en\/coins\/dmail-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">capitalisation<\/a> of about $26m.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the platforms above, others also merit attention: Friend.Tech, <a href=\"https:\/\/u1f987.com\/en\/news\/bluesky-opens-to-the-public-inside-jack-dorseys-decentralized-social-network\">Bluesky<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mirror.xyz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Mirror<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Minds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/explore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Mastodon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ethermail.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Ethermail<\/a>, Hive.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What holds DeSoc back<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Privacy-focused platforms and decentralised networks are promising, but they still face hurdles:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>user experience.<\/strong> The complexity of blockchain-based apps can deter mass adoption. People steeped in Web 2.0 and TradSoc do not always grasp Web3 technologies;<\/li>\n<li><strong>feature gaps.<\/strong> DeSoc still lacks some attractive features compared with centralised peers;<\/li>\n<li><strong>market competition.<\/strong> Social-network giants dominate, making it hard for DeSoc platforms to attract newcomers;<\/li>\n<li><strong>scalability and costs.<\/strong> High transaction fees, especially on networks such as Ethereum, become a serious issue during congestion;<\/li>\n<li><strong>market volatility.<\/strong> DeSoc platforms with their own cryptoeconomies can be exposed to risk. Market swings can quickly affect creator rewards and the overall stability of a social network;<\/li>\n<li><strong>regulation.<\/strong> DeSoc may face regulatory challenges, as there are still no global standards for blockchain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Censorship in traditional social networks is pushing users to alternative platforms where they are willing to pay for unfettered expression.<\/p>\n<p>As large platforms chase profit and shift to entertainment-heavy models, users face a lack of content diversity and independent voices. That is spurring the emergence and adoption of privacy-oriented DeSoc.
