US DoD to Develop Its Own AI

On 10 August, the U.S. Department of Defense announced the formation of the Lima operational group to study and develop generative artificial intelligence (AI).

The newly formed unit will focus on integrating AI technologies into the nation’s security apparatus.

According to the department, the aim of ‘Lima’ is to use large language models to enhance political relations, defence readiness, and combat capabilities.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks noted that the group will also counter potential threats arising from artificial intelligence.

“The future of defence is not only about adopting cutting-edge technologies, but also foresight, responsibility, and a deep understanding of the broader implications for our nation,” she added.

‘Lima’ will be led by the Office of the Chief Digital and AI, created in June 2022. The mission will be led by U.S. Navy Captain Manuel Xavier Lugo.

“The Department of Defence recognises the potential of generative AI to significantly improve intelligence, operational planning, as well as administrative and business processes. However, responsible implementation is key to effectively managing the accompanying risks,” Lugo explained.

The creation of the operational group may be linked to tensions between the United States and China in the AI technology space.

On 9 August, President Joe Biden signed an executive order, in which China, Hong Kong and Macau are named as countries of concern. Investments in technology in these regions will be regulated and restricted.

Earlier in April, details about the AI task force emerged. According to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the move was driven by risks associated with tools like ChatGPT amid their rising popularity.

Earlier, U.S. authorities issued a declaration on the use of artificial intelligence in the armed forces, including ‘human accountability’.
