Snap has unveiled the latest version of its generative artificial intelligence technology, enhancing the realism of special effects when using a phone camera for selfies, according to Reuters.
A pioneer in augmented reality (AR), Snap also announced an updated version of its developer program, Lens Studio. This platform enables the creation of AR features for Snapchat or other apps and websites.
Advanced special effects will be available to messaging app users in the coming months. The enhanced Lens Studio will reduce the time required to create AR effects from weeks to hours, allowing for more complex projects.
“We are excited that these tools expand people’s creative workspace. At the same time, they are easy to use, so beginners can quickly create something unique,” said Snap’s Chief Technology Officer Bobby Murphy.
Lens Studio now includes a set of generative AI-based tools, such as an assistant that answers developers’ questions or an automatic 3D image generator for AR lenses, eliminating the need to create a 3D model from scratch.
In the future, Snap plans to develop augmented reality for the entire body, not just the face. For instance, this could include clothing. Currently, achieving this is challenging, Murphy noted.
Back in May 2022, Snapchat released a realistic “crying” filter.
