Procreate Rejects Generative AI Integration
The developers of the popular iPad graphic editor, Procreate, have taken a stand against the use of generative AI.
The company has pledged not to integrate artificial intelligence into its products.
“Generative AI strips humanity from things. Built on a foundation of theft, this technology leads us to a barren future. We find machine learning an interesting tool with many merits, but the path AI is taking does not suit us,” states the company’s website.
Procreate CEO James Cuda, in a video message, emphasized that the company’s products are developed with the idea of creating something by humans. He expressed his disdain for generative AI and what “neural networks do to artists.”
We’re never going there. Creativity is made, not generated.

“We are here for people. We do not chase technology that poses a moral threat to our greatest treasure — human creativity […]”, stated Procreate.
Some artists have supported the company’s stance. User David Toons compared Procreate to Adobe Photoshop, highlighting the “overpriced monthly subscription” and the presence of generative AI features without the option to disable them.

In December 2022, the developer of the graphic application Clip Studio Paint, Celsys, cancelled the release of an AI image generator due to negative user feedback.
In April 2024, Adobe began acquiring video clips to create a “text-to-video” neural network.
Earlier, the company announced cross-platform AI integration with Microsoft.
