Hut 8 Introduces ‘Lego Approach’ for Switching Between AI and Bitcoin Mining
Hut 8 developed a modular model for switching between AI and bitcoin mining.
The mining company Hut 8 has developed a modular infrastructure model that allows for flexible switching of computing power between AI tasks and bitcoin mining, according to The Block.
In a discussion organized by Benchmark, Hut 8’s CFO, Shaun Glennan, likened the implemented architecture to a Lego set. The company segments data centers and energy capacities into individual blocks, which can be quickly reallocated for different tasks—from high-performance computing to traditional mining.
This approach enables rapid adaptation to market conditions, including changes in bitcoin prices and demand for AI services.
Switching Between AI and Mining
The key feature of the model is the ability to dynamically redistribute capacities:
- when demand in the AI segment rises, resources are directed towards GPU computing;
- when mining economics improve, capacities return to cryptocurrency extraction;
- the infrastructure (energy, cooling, sites) is used in both scenarios.
This is made possible by the similar requirements for data centers: both models require significant energy capabilities and advanced cooling systems.
A top executive at Hut 8 noted that the implemented architecture reflects a broader trend—the convergence of the crypto industry and the AI sector.
Earlier, specialists at Wintermute stated that the traditional business model of bitcoin miners is becoming obsolete due to declining profitability.
