AI-generated track featuring Drake’s vocals nominated for Grammys

A track created with the help of artificial intelligence, featuring deepfake vocals of Drake and The Weeknd, will compete at the Grammys in the categories Best Rap Song and Song of the Year. The author said this in an interview with The New York Times.

Heart on My Sleeve by the anonymous producer Ghostwriter997 quickly went viral on TikTok in the spring of this year. Later, the AI musician submitted the track to the Recording Academy, which organises the Grammys.

Experts vetted the composition for legality and approved it for inclusion.

“Regarding the creative side, it is absolutely worthy of attention, as it was written by a human. […] We know that AI will play an important role in our business. We cannot turn away and try to ban it,” said Harvey Mason Jr., the Recording Academy producer.

According to Ghostwriter, his team met with record labels, tech leaders, music platforms and artists to discuss the use of AI capabilities.

On September 5, the anonymous composer released a new track, Whiplash, which copies the voices of rappers Travis Scott and 21 Savage.

“The future of music is already here. Artists now have the opportunity to let their voice work for them without lifting a finger. If you decide to release such a track, I will clearly label it as AI and route royalties to you. Respect in any case,” wrote Ghostwriter.

Before using AI components, the producer independently sought to align the content, delivery, tone and phrasing with the styles of well-known stars.

Songs can be heard only on TikTok, X (formerly Twitter) and SoundCloud. Major streaming services are still hesitant to publish AI-created compositions.

Earlier in August, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan shared plans to integrate AI into the music industry. He said that in 2023 videos related to generative AI tools on the platform had drawn more than 1.7 billion views.
